Remove this cat urine from my strap!

Last week, i guess two of my bass straps looked like litter boxes to them. Of course i didn't know until i got to practice and slung on my bass.

It was gross.

So, how do i remove it? I'm really just worried about degrading the leather-y parts on the end.

You can’t!!!
Nothing really removes smelly cat urine - at best, you can only delude or mask/cover the smell.

EDIT: PS, you’ll get a list of stuff people swear works - but trust me, don’t waste your money.

I work at a pet store and have had to do the same with a soft case that came with a used acoustic. Like people are saying, soak it in an enzymatic cleaner. These are available at most pet stores. I do not recommend natures miracle. They are a company who once they found a formula that worked, they never tried to improve it. They only made slight tweaks to other types they sell. Some of the better ones a definitely include Bissell. If you can find Bissell in the urine eliminator formula, this stuff is the best. Soak the straps continuously then leave them outside to air. I would hang them out on a close line and every few hours reapply the sprays until gone. Another good method would be to lay the straps on a flat surface, soak them, then place paper towel a over them, then soak the paper towels. Allow these to dry naturally. The most enclosure will aid in the enzymatic action. Likely, i would try both methods one day after another. I have been doing/selling/working this for a few years. PM me if you need any more tips on it. Unfortunately, I'm a pet odor pro! hahaha

My neighbor'scat got my hiking boots on the porch. I tried vinegar, washing in the washing machine, the crap that comes in a spray bottle with enzymes, leaving them in the sun for a week (screened in porch so the little bastard couldn't do it again), and FILLING them with baking soda for a few days. I ended up throwing them out. Nothing got rid of that smell.

But cat people get truly offended at the mere MENTION of keeping the little worthless varmints out of my yard. One actually told me it was MY FAULT because I left them out in MY YARD. Pet people. Almost all weirdos.

Lestoil works.
I delivered oil for a company and a cat pissed on all the uniforms.
When the uniforms came back without any trace of cat piss everyone asked and the uniform guy said they always use Lestoil when ever there is a cat piss problem.
I have 2 cats and have used Lestoil many times and it works.

I have 6 cats, so this kind of thing happens sometimes. The best and cheapest solution is a home remedy called StinkyPets, super easy to make at home.

1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 drop (more or less) Dish Detergent

...mix, put in a spray bottle, and saturate the offended object. Let dry, preferably outside in the sun in a cat-proof location. Usually it takes just one application to do the trick!!! It works on carpets and couches too.

Male cats will "mark" things to establish territory (even after they're neutered if the habit has already set in). The liquid they spray is not urine but still has a foul odor.

Unfortunately in either case it's a signal for them to keep peeing in that spot so it's important to get the straps cleaned or at least move them away from the rest of your gear right away.

This. Cats do not have accidents outside of medical emergencies/dying. Spraying is different. You need to maintain your cat's litter box better. If you have multiple cats it is also advised you have multiple litterboxes, at the least you have to stay on top of it. It is kind of shocking that some people own cats and do not know this...

In regards to the strap, toss them. You are going to buy $15 in cleaner and spend 2 hours of your time just to save two $20 straps that may still stink of cat piss afterwards. If it was a $150 strap I would get saving it, but this seems like a waste of effort to me personally.

Not saying that I necessarily hate cats or anything like that but...
Whenever I meet someone that I am attracted to one of the first things that I ask is, "Do you have a cat?"
If the answer is yes, it's like, so long cat person.
Odds are really good that there is a cat box in their house that smells really bad and they no longer notice the smell. Also I really hate the fact that Muffy or Morris or whoever usually gets to sleep in the bed.

Get new straps, and then figure out why your cats were spraying. Are they not spayed/ neutered? Do they get along with each other? Cats only pee outside the box if...
A) They are sick
B) Something is wrong with their litter box (hopefully boxes if it's more than one cat.
C) Something in their environment has changed or is wrong.

One of our cats is peeing outside the box lately because we brought 3 kittens in from outside and thats cutting into her personal, leave me the f*** alone time.

For removing foul odors (and cat piss has to be among the worst) there is nothing better than Febreze. It's amazing. However, I have heard that it makes strings dead, so just know that. Good luck. If I had cats that did that, they would learn to fear my equipment.
