One of the ensembles I've been playing with (New River Bound) is set to begin tracking next week... I'm going to use both the fretted, and fretless RB-5 basses.

I really don't... and this will be my first time recording a Renaissance bass. Since we'll be tracking live, in the same room, with a little overdubbing in post-production only, I have a few options. There's going to be track bleed-over anyway, but that's not necessarily bad for what we're doing.

Couple things I hope to try:

1. Use the direct out on my amp (Mesa Walkabout) for presence and let the room mics capture some air moving. Deal with it on mix day.

2. Use the output of an acoustic preamp. (I have a DTar Equinox and a Rane AP 13) I'd have to wear the headphones to do this, which I'd rather not do.

3. Mic the amp combo-cab, but in a separate room. (Walkabouts have notoriously noisy fans)

Suggestions appreciated... I liked what you had on the Rare Blend selections.

All the Rare Blend recordings were done through preamps into the recorders, no amps or mics were involved so I was wearing headphones. However, the headphones I used was an AKG K401 which is open back so I could hear the other instruments. The ones with the RB5FL were through my old Avalon U5, the RB4FL was recorded through my Raven Labs PHA-1.

I'm actually (still) stuck in town here at work, but at least have my Electroline and a practice amp to pass the time between shoveling out. Got bass and coffee... all good! :thumbup:

Haven't bumped our Renaissance/Turner thread in a while...

The RB-5 Custom fretless got a good workout last night... in a reunion of sorts with the acoustic-indy-folk band I used to gig with full-time. Back in the hungrier days (1994-2002) I played a plugged-in upright bass or an EUB for everything we did, but lately have been incorporating the Renaissance bass into more of my musical adventures. I used just a pinch of chorus effect and a little push on the low-end of my Walkabout, they all dug it...

though maybe not as much as me! ;)

Whatchu guys been up to?

I've been busy getting my back hall project finished at home, and working on a lot of songs for the band. The RB4FL sounds great on some of them; the guys in the band are blown away by it's tone. :bassist:

Also, I just got a new computer last week and have been getting it set up and learning all the new ways of doing things now that I am a Maverick(s)!

EdwardofHuncote posted recently in the Walkabout Megathread and suggested I drop by here and show my Turner Ren fretless 4. Mine is quite an old model, built in '97. I bought it from the original owner in 2007. It has the old style headstock Turner badge and does not have the writing around the neck pocket that newer models have.

I run it into the Walkabout and a Berg CN212. Looks wonderful and sounds great.

here they are together, along with a nice shot of the Turner by itself.

What strings are you using on that bass?

Welcome pfschim! Yeah man... yours may be the earliest Ren we've seen here. Nice!

I like the simple "T" in the headstock... I believe Rick still uses something close to that on Model 1 guitars. Seems like there was a lower-case "r" for a while too.
