Repair Shop Damage

If refinishing is considered I'll mention I sent a bass body to Marty Bell and it came back looking top notch... but Yeh, I'd be choked too.

I'm sure a decent touch-up person could deal with those chips so they'd be totally invisible without any full refin. But my question would be that considering they were incompetent enough to chip the finish in the first place, could you trust them to pick a touch-up person who wouldn't make it look even worse!?

So...I brought my BRAND NEW bass into a HIGHLY recommended shop to have the electronics swapped. I go to pick it up tonight and there are six chips in the paint. SIX!!!
Needless to say I'm pissed.

In your opinion, what would it take for the shop to make it right?

That almost looks like they pulled the pickups and the wires may have been shorter than they thought, so one (or more) slipped out of their hands. If I was working on someone else's instrument, I wouldn't ever leave bare wood/paint where anything could damage it. I would put some painter's tape on it and tape a towel down. There's a lot of ways to keep this from happening. I took my Strat in for fret leveling and it had a few scratches. I have known the guy for a long time and, while it's not a rare instrument, I still don't like things coming back with new scratches and dings.

I will say, though- It's really easy to ding something while being extremely careful. Still, the tech should have said something.

No, it's not refinished. It's brand new. The logo is on the other side. It's a lefty.

Ah, so it is. I see that now.

I think, by rights, you have them over a barrel.
You need to take it to a pro refinisher (preferably 2 or 3 if possible) and get quotes on a restoration... get both full and touch up quotes and have those quotes ready to drop on your so called "repair" guy.

Whether you actually follow through or pocket the money and call your new bass a relic is up to you.

Those do look like solder splatters (I've had one or two of those myself). They can effect the finish through thin tape.

I'd bet they will offer touch-up only. I would recommend having a dollar-figure in your head for your pain and suffering and take it to a painter you trust.

That sucks. Hopefully you're happy with the repair.

Here's their offer...said theyll take some money off the $120 wiring repair that they did. Said I can't prove it wasn't damaged when I dropped it off. The tech is denying that he did it. And the girl who took it in said she doesn't remember there being any chips but she also doesn't remember there not being any.

sounds pretty crappy. might be time to do a little Craigslist "article" to warn other people in the area about this sh*t. might not be a bad idea to warn other tb'ers to stay away from this place. at minimum I think they should be knocking 100 bucks off that repair.

If I took a perfect instrument in to a "highly recommended" shop and they legitimately did that to me, I'd say their name on TB so others would no not to recommend them anymore. If I were trying to scam them into painting my previously-damaged instrument, I would just take the discount they offered and never go back again.

Man that sucks. Makes me thankful for my tech!

I'm dealing with the owner. Went to speak w him yesterday. Said he'd be willing to take $60 off the repair cost. (Which was pretty insulting.) Said that it's not a really high end finish and that they chip pretty easily. I told him that I'm fine w my finish getting dinged. But not right away and not by them. If my bass is going to take some hits, itll be from me and I don't care how "high end" the finish is, they got it in perfect condition. Then i told him that I'm perfectly willing to pay the full cost of the initial repair, I just want my bass back the way that I gave it to them. So now tomorrow he's going to have a restorer that he knows take a look at it.

Those rotten jerks they are begging to be sued.
