Replacement speaker for an Ibanez Promethean P3110

Is this combo's chassis simply the P300H mounted in the box? I like mine quite a bit. Instead of trying to reinvent the combo contrary to its design, could you remove the amp and buy a cab?
 
Throughout this thread I don't see anyone doing the logical first step and asking Ibanez for a proper replacement speaker. Why are people so averse to contacting the manufacturer for support? This is especially prudent since the speaker is unique to the combo's design.

I got a p3110 the other day. I bought it used. And unfortunetly it must havet gotten a beating in transport. The speakers have fallen apart and is to my eye beyond repair.
I was thinking of ordering a Eminence CA-10 just like @stratovani and I was wondering about the wiring. It seems I would have some cabels hanging loose. There are five cabels coming to the speakers from amp and the Eminence CA-10 just need two, right? Would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction with this. What to do with the Wired. (And yes, I am a noob att this )
You can put in a single 8ohm speaker, 150 watts minimum, doesn't have to be coaxial, doesn't have to have a tweeter.
Here is a picture of the wiring. There's 5 wires coming from the amp, and one short lead that runs from one post on the speaker to anonther (that's your tweeter-lead).

The red and black leads (tie-wrapped together) are your main leads for your speaker. Red is +, black -. You can use these for your replacement-speaker and it will work. The short black lead runs from the + (red) of your speaker to the tweeter +, the single (thinner) black lead going back to the amp is the tweeter - and goes to your tweeter on/of switch. If you want to install an OEM (piezo) tweeter you can use these. If not just put some isolation-tape on the connector and leave it.

The white and other black lead are used for the extra "fantom" voice-coil of the original speaker (which is there to have the amp deliver 300w at 4ohm, but is not connected to a cone so doesn't produce sound). You don't need this for your new speaker, just isolate and leave them.
So put in a 8 ohm speaker like the Eminence CA-10, connect the red and black wires and you have 150w combo. And you can still connect an extra external 8ohm cab, which really makes a diffrence in sound and volume!
Hope this is clear, I'm not really a technician so I'm sure I used all the wrong terms, but this works and is safe.

I just didn't think it through. Turns out Ibanez have the speakers as a spare part and at a good price to. So thanks for pointing that out.
 
Martelino, I totally didn't understand your description of the "fantom" voice coil. That's impossible.
Again, I think some of the challenge of explanations and comments that have been given throughout this thread involve translation challenges from non-English native speakers.

It APPEARS that the original driver is in fact a DUAL VOICECOIL coil driver, normally these are wired either in series or parallel for different impedances (1/2x or 2x the single VC impedance rating), but if one of the VC's is left open (or terminated with a high impedance to minimize the potential for high voltages to be generated across the coil) the driver will still function (but with very different TS parameters).

Dual voice coil drivers have over the years had different primary applications, one of which is to combine 2 signal sources (one connected to each driver) and would operate like an electro-acoustic transformer combiner in this configuration.
 
I get all that dual voice coil stuff, but he stated a coil that's not connected to the cone, to produce a 4 ohm load to make the amp provide 300 watts. The driven coil would still only get theoretically half the power. So the other "non driven" coil just soaks up the other half and does nothing? That's what I don't get, what's the point?

No, when the second coil is open (via the extension jack switching), only one coil is in the circuit and the second coil draws no power.

The point is that it allows a second 8 ohm cabinet to be connected.

In practice there may be other (and possibly better) way to do this, but that's how this particular unit works (at least the version that uses a dual voice coil woofer).

Like I wrote before, I'm not a technician and I probably don't use the right terms. I only tried to explain how to replace the speaker. Seems to me that this way of using a DVC is very uncommon and wasn't considered succesfull because Ibanez discontinued it and no one else used this idea. I only know that this little amp is the best sounding and most powerfull of the smaller budget-friendly rehearsal/small/gig/upright bass amps. And I've used all of the usual suspects. I'm a musician, I use things that sound best to my ears, I don't decide based on technical aspects. I reckon that this little amp will die some day or it will be impossible to find replacement parts, well, then we'll try something else...

Yes, my bad. Sorry, I was reacting to the conversation as a whole and not to your reply to 6thplanet. I'm really sorry that my English - or should I say American - isn't up to par to participate in the conversations on this forum without making petty mistakes, thus sowing confusion and annoyance. The thing is, in the Netherlands, where I live, we don't have as many bassplayers and hence not a fine, helpfull and friendly community like Talkbass. But I will try to be better informed next time I participate in one of your threads.
 
No worries, I was earlier suggesting (respectfully) that part of the challenge and source of confusion might have been due to inaccurate translation between languages.

I can guarantee that your English is orders of magnitude better than our mastery of Dutch. ;)
