Then I stand corrected; all of the "contact" I had with Ed Friedland's playing was him doing either fingers or slap. Maybe I should watch some of the reviews.

For sure! This is a chance to post one of my all time favorites: Metheny, Sanchez and Bona doing Bright Size Life. I know, the Jaco version is iconic, but check this version out -- it's so alive and brilliant, even compared to that high standard:

I saw and heard Bona for the first time when he was on tour with Pat Metheny Group doing the Speaking of Now tour. I thought to myself "Who is this great percussionist with the incredible voice?"

Then that happened.

Apparently my tongue in cheek font wasn’t activated. I know EXACTLY what culture influenced every note/style I play, and NONE of them looked like Beethoven ... or ME for that matter.

I never did get funding for my ‘Play Suburban White Kids Parliament/Motown/Prince/Stevie/Howlin Wolf’ initiative but OOOH WEEE it worked for me

There's a common denominator in Richard's playing that I hear in all musical styles I dig: I hear a real human being emoting through his instrument. Yeah, the licks and tricks are impressive, but I always feel he's saying something. Hard to quantify, but then, I don't go in for that 'let's examine all the bleeps and bloops of music that it becomes like math'. There's value in doing that of course, but I know it by the head bob and by the hairs that do or do not stand up on my neck.

Richard has on many occasion given me 'the feels' when I hear him play.

I call ‘em ‘two note’ singers/players. Two notes in and I know who it is. Marcus/Jamerson/Chaka Khan/Michael McDonald/Frank Sinatra ... list goes on. VERY difficult to achieve.

That Kilimanjaro bass reminds me of another instrument, but I can’t place it. It looks pretty big. I would like to hear some else play it because Richard Bona will get that fluid, rubbery, midrange on any bass he touches.

I saw Richard Bona last year at the NYC winter jazz fest (my wife is a big fan too). He played with a great band from spain (the flamenco project) that included a flamenco dancer and guitarist. It was so fantastic!
