Exactly, after reading comments I read in video I posted a few pages ago, I realized this is an unintentional or purposeful nod to Zon.
He's quite amazing. I've heard him before, but just listening to some of the clips in this thread really reminds me of just how incredibly good he is.
Jaco's the one where I hear people trying to cop him within a note (I'm so guilty of this on a Fretless). When Jaco gets on his Rocco-Prestia-influenced 16th note grooves, I can always tell it's him.
To the subject of 'our culture/who we are' comes out in the playing, and Richard Bona definitely has that going on, I hear that in Jaco in a big way. I've been in Oklahoma the last 22 years, but spent my formative years in/around Sarasota/Tampa and Boca Raton/Ft Lauderdale. Age 9-16, when my musical sponge was dry and ready to soak up influences. The confluence of Caribbean/African/trad Jazz/Reggae/Afro-Cuban Jazz/etc that you hear just going to the dang grocery store ... it gets into your DNA.
This is a marvelous video! It is a real pleasure to hear an extended Richard Bona performance in a purely Jazz setting. The man is a magnificent bassist!

There are some great clips here I haven't heard before - still learning his catalog. He's so inspiring.
I feel grateful that there is still room in music for mortals like me with a way, way lower level of talent and execution.

Listening to these videos, Richard Bona is the most versatile bassist I know of. It would be interesting to hear him playing with South Asian (Indian) musicians. I already know he can nail African and Middle Eastern derived rhythms.
Bona and Anthony Jackson may be my two GOATs. Bona for his versatility and fluidity in performing so many styles. Jackson for his pioneering vision in transforming the instrument itself and his distinct approach to constructing basslines within a group.

He’s the bassist everyone loves but they don’t even know it.
I was having this convo with a non musician friend who found bass solos a la Jaco and Hadrien dry but agrees Motown and the like is just plain gold.

Bit late to the party, but check this clip that Mr.Bona playing a jazz bass. What an amazing tone! I know he played Djombe a lot from his famous Fodera but IMO he sounds definitely better when playing a passive bass.
The like button is not good enough for that, we need an awesome button!
Yeah! Seriously, he knows how to extract mid tone from his basses. Mid-heavy hands + Passive bass = Growl heaven!
It was fun to see Richard Bona cut loose playing African Pop music. He was really having fun.
Yeah, like Abraham Laboriel he brings such joy to the music.
