Hi guys got my birthday present yesterday

a mint condition 1984 jetglo 4003.
This bass is in imaculate condition and the tone is awesome. I have been waiting to get my hands on one for sum time since I sold my 77 mapleglo. Anyway I had to tell someone, I cant wait untill tonights rehearsal it feels good to be back in the RIC club. One question I have is do you have to have the Ricosound box to run two amps or can I just use two cords out of the stereo jack?,I never used the Ricosound with my 77. I already play loud enough my band should really love me when I bring two stacks two rehearsal.

Your advice was really appreciated. I tried all over to get a stereo Y lead, but could only find very short ones, then I saw an ad for a second hand Ric o sound kit at a Ric site (for a very good price) and decided to buy it. Can’t wait for it to arrive.

Hi Spike I dont think you wasted your money I have asked around and you do need the Ric-o-sound unit to get a true stereo signal. I was told not to even try the two cords directly out of the bass it wont work very well and you might do some damage. So I will be hunting around on the web for a Ric-o-sound unit also. Played mine for the first time with the band last night and the bass was flawless, I love this thing!

Hi, this is my first post. I started playing bass about 7 months ago, why on earth I waited so long is beyond me. But I found this thread and just had to put my two cents in. I started playing on some borrowed and rental basses until a few months ago when I found a bass for sale. It was a 79 4001 in excellent shape and it even still has the original owner's card with it. I beleive I am the 3rd owner of it. I offered the guy $275 for it, he wanted more, but I got it for $300 because the guy was on his way to prison, so he needed fast cash! The more I research about my bass, the more I find out that I got a fine deal! I really enjoy playing it, it's taken me some time to get used to the weight of it but I think that would be true of all but the lightest of basses. Sometime I'll have to try out that Ric-o-sound feature.

Congrats Offbase! on your new Jetglo 4003, Great choice of colour. I haven't stopped playing mine since I got it, Welcome to the RIC club. Has anybody performed the bypass surgery mentioned on the last page yet?, Im going to give a shot tonight I want full output out of the bridge pup also. Offbase I think they corrected this problem on the new models do you have equal output out of both pups?

Thanks, Funkster. As far as the pup balance goes, it's now the opposite -- there's next to nothing out of the neck pup. I've posted in the pickups forum asking if anyone's ever tried the SD replacements for 4003's, but if it's in the wiring design, maybe the pups wouldn't make any difference?

Hey congrats to everybody who just got a RIC, you'll find that it has a killer sound and playability!

I'm also curious about the (in)famous capacitor surgery. Has anyone done it yet? I'm pretty happy with my sound right now, but that would be a cool modification (and one of the few that i would ever do to a RIC).

I suggest you guys try the damper system on the bridge of your RICs. I asked about it on Talbass some time ago and i've been using it from time to time. Its really neat, im starting to like it more and more.

Anyway, take it easy, and make your rics ROAR! :)

Howdy Rickenbacker I am going to give the bypass surgery a go tonight I just printed up all the post from this thread and went to the RIC site and downloaded the wiring schematic so as soon as I get out of work my RIC is going under the knife. I'll let you know how the recovery went.

If you want to hear what the modification will do to your bass. Go to your local Rickenbacker dealer and plug in a 4001v63 Bring your Rick with you for a direct comparison. You will immediately hear what your bass will sound like with the wiring modification. The 4001v63 and the 4000 are the only two Rickenbacker basses wired this way at the factory.

Hi All! I am glad to report that my RIC's bypass surgery was a total success and the results were incredible. I can't believe the bottom I can get out of it now. I have complete control over both pups now, I can always get that nasely tone it had by just rolling off the bridge pup volume to three quarters or less.
The only trouble I had was I set it up with a jumper wire to make sure that it worked. I connected the jumper to a leg on the bridge pup and a leg on the selector switch and nothing happened, I tried it a couple times and a couple of different ways and nothing. Well I went for it and unsolderd one side of the cap and put the jumper in place of the cap and wala! full vol out of my bridge pup and man it makes all of the diferrence in the world. I took the cap completely out and got a piece of wire the same gauge and solderd it in it's place, modification is done, piece of cake. I would recommend this mod for anyone with a RIC you can still have that middy top end thing just by dialing it in and you can have twice the bottom and way more tonal range than you had before. Any help I can be just ask. Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread.

Glad to hear that the operation was a outstanding success!!!
If more 4001 and 4003 owners knew about this simple mod we Rickenbacker bass players would be even happier people then we already are.
For Rick owners out there that are not inclined to make modifications to your bass yourself. Take your 4001 or 4003 to your local pro guitar shop and ask them to make the modification for you. It's very simple and can be done in 5 minutes
Remember to visit the rickenbacker.com site and click on the service button, then click on the schematics button and click on the 4001v63 - 4000 wiring diagram. Print it and bring it with you to your local guitar repair shop. Tell them that you want your bass wired like the diagram. You will be very happy with the results, just like the Funkster was.

Couple of questions on this topic...

What is the original purpose for this capacitor? It apparantly only exists on stereo models (the 4001,3, etc) and doesn't on mono models (4000,4001v63,exports(S),etc). How does it affect the stereo output? (I haven't checked the diagram lately and can't make any immediate conclusions.)

Also, I read about the "build at home" rick-o-sound kit a couple of pages back. Is there a difference between the stereo box and a stereo to mono y cable (I'm assuming they exist) or is it just cheaper to build?
