RIP Tim Drummond

Neil has lost Ben, Rick and now Tim in recent times. Very sad. Anybody know what happened to Tim?
Apparently he had health issues for a while and within the last couple years dealt with pneumonia and hip replacement surgery. My cousin seems pretty torn up so I didn't ask the exact cause of death but one of his Facebook friends mentioned that Tim passed in his sleep. Online there is mention of him dropping out of James Brown's band after contracting hepatitis in Vietnam in the late 60's.
.........If not for your thread, Tber rmars, most of us would have not known of his passing.

Thanks for your cousin's photo.
Just trying to honor one of our bass playing brethren. Honestly I didn't know about him till a few years ago but when I looked thru his credits I was just blown away. What a unsung legend this guy is!

I can’t remember what years I subscribed so not sure if I have that issue. Will look thru my back issues later today and see if I can find it.
Thank you! Just today I sent an email to an eBay seller with multiple issues from 1995-96 to ask if he'd have a look. If no luck with the BP's perhaps it was an article in Musician magazine, which I read a lot in those days as well.

Um....... dang. Turns out we ALL know his work in one form or another.

Anyone know what gear he used? I'm always curious when I hear a tone I like. I was listening to "Heart of Gold" just now and thinking that the bass sounded really good. I couldn't find anything by googling. I did learn that it was DI but nothing about the amp or bass used.

I'm kinda late to the party and got by here by way of Google. Been listening to the Neil Young channel on SiriusXM lately, I knew Tim played on Harvest and knew he died but missed this thread. I've owned the Harvest album since it was new and Tim's bass playing has always been the high water mark for playing tasteful and in the pocket which were both foreign concepts to me back then :laugh:. The older I get the more I appreciate this kind of playing. RIP Tim.

Gear? Mostly an old single-coil Precsion. One had the Bakelite saddles the very first ones came with. That's from an ancient Rolling Stone Mag article that had little one- or two-paragraph bits on a host of session players once. Old flats, no brand specified. The "Harvest" album (I bought it the week it was released) has a photo of the band rehearsing in Neil's barn- Tim's using an Acoustic rig of some sort- it's too blurry to tell but I'd assume it's the 360/370 rig.

Ken (first cousin once removed) is much older than me and a bit older than my mom. He is an incredibly interesting individual in his own right; he raced flat track motorcycles and since the 70's he's lived in the mountains of Montana giving hunting tours and then converting to photography(he's also friends with American painter Howard Terpning and featured on his dvd). His life and Tim's went very different directions but it's interesting that the the two still stayed in touch all these years.

Tim was an awesome bass player. I always enjoyed his playing. His discography reads like a Who’s Who of rock and pop music.

I had friends who were flat trackers who probably knew your cousin. Ted Boody Jr. and Bob Lill, both deceased. Both from Lansing, MI. Ted died racing on a mile track. Bob died of cancer last year.

Just heard from my cousin that his good friend, legendary bassist Tim Drummond passed away. I was never fortunate enough to meet Tim but he was from Canton, IL where I was born and my cousin Ken was kind enough to share a few funny stories about getting calls in the middle of the night from Tim, Bob Dylan and George Harrison (and if I recall Mick Jagger). Tim has an amazing resume; he's recorded and/or toured with Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Conway Twitty, Neil Young (toured and played on Harvest), Miles Davis, J.J. Cale, Lonnie Mack, Jewel, Crosby, Stills, & Nash and is noted for being the first white musician in James Brown's band. Whether or not you've heard Tim's name at some point you've probably heard him play; For people of my generation whenever you hear Jewel's original recording of "Who Will Save Your Soul" and you hear that little bass break down in the middle that's Tim. RIP.

Edit;
Here is a photo taken by my cousin Ken Allaman when Tim was trying to get him into doing photography for album covers. He gave me permission to post it when I told him about this forum.

I'm Sterlene Drummond Tim's daughter. I only recently found this page and was moved to read all the posts about him. I like the photo Ken Allman was a good friend and fine man. He rode across country to Canton after Dad passed. That's where I saw him last, with an article about Dad from the Canton paper he saved. Thank you again, Sterlene Drummond-
