Yup, just the standard quad coils. So far so good. This is definitely the best that the bass has sounded. I'm very pleased.
I hear you Joe. It'd have to be a really well paying gig for me to do it. I'm not a fan of playing those gigs, but it'd really help me while I go to school. Teaching just isn't consistent enough on it's own. I could use the extra income.

....it'll take some time for it to happen, but the next bass may have turned into a 7 string semi hollow bass with a piezo bridge and one magnetic pickup....again, narrow spacing so basically the neck will be similar to a 6 string. I never thought I'd ever go with more than 6, but I want the high F, and I'm having a difficult time imagining not having the low B....we'll see if I can make that leap!

Honestly man, I kept thinking how much I personally dislike every "bass player" I hear with a bass with more than 6 strings.....then I realized, I'm not them.....and to be completely honest, one of my absolute favorite bass players just got one made and it kind of broke the stigma for me. He's one of the most musical human beings on the planet. In his hands it can only be a tool for incredibly creative, beautiful music. I also wouldn't do it if I didn't already have a vision for how to utilze the range of the instrument, which I do.
Nicky, yes. I emailed Brian and he said he'd be up for it. He had mentioned being curious about building a 7 string some time ago. This would also be a semi hollow bass, so it'd be a few new things for him. The only thing left is to talk about a slightly different body (lower horn needs to have a deep cutaway and also needs to allow the bass to be higher on my lap).
Again, this isn't even for certain, but it's good to know that Brian's on board if I go this direction.

Kudos Andy for going in a new direction! One of the most inspiring things to me has been watching Scott Pazera kill it on his 7-string...then again, he kills it on a 4 -string too (and probably even a 1-string haha).

There's going to be another GTG in Rhode Island in November- maybe you can make it to that one. I'm still curious how a Ristola plays/feels.

Hi Andy, I'm taking off time over the Labor Day holiday and after that I'll be driving 'solo'. With a little luck I can get the Load Planner to get me a load to NH. If this happens I'll get in touch with you and Brian. I'll bring my 6 along, and hopefully we can hook up. I'll keep you posted.

I hope Brian isn't making any sweeping changes to his line; I absolutely love the body shape/ergonomics of my Exotic-6. I envision that I'll have him build me another 6 with a JJ pickup setup, and a 5-string with a P/J pickup setup in the future.
Good to hear he'll be spending more time building instruments. He does impeccable work.
I believe the only thing he's considering changing is the lower horn. I keep mentioning that it's not adequate for playing while seated. It slides off of my leg....very frustrating. He mentioned that others have said the same. Honestly it's better than some basses I've seen. I just don't feel that the majority of bass makers take this into consideration. Fodera was the first company that seemed to address this (because of AJ I assume). Pete Skjold has a new body design that does this as well. I'm really hoping that Brian comes up with something similar.
Man, I have three different bass designs in my head.....I just need the money so I can have Brian make them. Being in school again makes making money very, very difficult.....I really need a revised version of my current bass (different body wood and lower horn). I also need a fretless and a thick, semi hollow six or seven.
A PJ 5 is a great idea! I'd love to have one for myself someday. I love the PJ setup.

Choosing between alder and mahogany was a really tough choice for me. I'm really happy with the alder body/bubinga top on my bass, -but for the JJ-6, I'd really like to try a mahogany body, perhaps Brian's mahogany/myrtle top combo. I remember both you and Brian were very happy with how that combo works.
I'm planning on having the P/J 5-string built first, I'll most likely go with a painted solid alder body on it; I'm thinking either a deep red or dark blue finish, chrome harware and a 5-piece maple/purpleheart neck with a birdseye maple fingerboard.
-Kind of a Brian Ristola-meets Leo Fender-meets a 5-string, if you will.
