Hey ya'll....Brian has just finished the entire Appalachian Trail!!! We should be finding out more about his basses in the coming months. Looking forward to what he comes up with.

I actually don't know that he knows yet. He's still decompressing from the trip. We shall see! He mentioned some things before he left. Not sure what he'll decide.
I don't post much, but for the past few months I've been looking to have a 5 string fretless made. Did a lot of research, read tons on posts on talkbass and basschat, and reached out to a few luthiers.
Did a few email exchanges with Brian - while he was on the trail - and made the move (or should I say, made the deposit?
Brian will be crafting for me what I'm sure will be an astounding instrument. Man, I cannot wait! I feel like a kid who's getting his first bike for his birthday.

- Mahogany or Spanish Cedar body (is there really a difference?)
- Figured Cherry or Koa top
- 34" or 35" neck (I'm a little worried about the B string)
- fretless lined ebony fretboard
- Piezo bridge
- Delano p'ups
- Nordstrand 3-band preamp
- ramp
- black hardware
Will be finishing the spec-sheet next week when Brian's back home next week.

Glen, that sounds like a great bass. A couple of thoughts....there is definitely a difference between mahogany and spanish cedar. Mahogany will have a stronger sound in the low mids. Spanish cedar is more "acoustic" sounding. For a fretted bass spanish cedar isn't something I'm a fan of. There are certainly exceptions, but overall it just doesn't cut through. For fretless it can be incredible. Mahogany will give you a little more meat to the sound. Both great choices for fretless. Mahogany has been Brian's magic wood choice. The mahogany he sources is really something.
Brian's 34" scale basses have exceptional B strings. They're really something. You in no way will lose anything with the B string. Also, the 34" scale will sound much better for a fretless.

Hi Glen, I agree very much with emjazz on his feelings about Spanish cedar. I have an upper end fretted bass with a Spanish cedar body, and I really regret not going with a different body wood when I ordered it.
I would also suggest mahogany of your two choices, -especially for a fretless bass. -Just my 2 cents.
And congrats on the rest of your specs. That's going to be a really special bass.

Glen, I saw your bass as it is now...rough cut body and neck. You're going to get a really incredible bass! Beautiful top wood, and you went with the magic mahogany. Really excited to see how that one comes out.

For the top wood, yes I kinda fell in love with it, after a few photos that Brian sent as soon as he was back home. Always scary though, as you don't really know how the finished bass will look. I'm sure this'll be great and one-of-a-kind!
