the Rockfield electronics are freakin awesome (and can't be had anywhere else!) they can do both passive and active! you can dial a p thump, a Ric's trebly growl (think Geddy Working man!), or a modern Hi-fi groove

the bridge some people don't care for, but it has grown on me and fits the metal bill (as you mentioned it would be mostly for metal) the sustain however is phenominal (im sure the neck through helps)

Maple, Ebony, and a Wenge fret board!

and fits very neatly in your proce range ($500.00 to $700.00)

for the money IMHO they cannot be touched

I have small hands and find my 4 string Corvette super easy to get around on. I've played a 5 string 'vette and it was fine too. I didn't care for the Thumb I played tough.
FWIW I'd just save up a bit more an get a used Corvette and growl away.

WOW how did i miss this thread. Rockbass Vamp was my first bass and i still have it actually. For what it is its a great bass. The Alder body/rosewood board gives a nice warm tone and it actually has a 3 piece maple neck which i find very rare for a bass in that price range. Having a 24 fret instrument is also very nice. The bass goes from warm to growly to nice warwick sounding highs. My favorite thing about the bass is the balance. Its probably the most balanced bass ive ever played. When im sitting in a chair and am holding the bass in playing position and resting it on my leg if i let go with my hands and lean back the bass will actually stay balanced on my leg. Overall its a great bass for the money but i think most stores have no interest in stocking them because of the odd style body shape.

I am actually trying to sell mine to help finance a fretless. If your interested send me a private message.

You know - you should really just go to your local GC or music stores, and try stuff out ... don't go by pictures alone.
There are lots of brands/models in that price bracket.

Ibanez, Peavey, and Schecter make great stuff - as do many others. Seriously ... Try Stuff Out! ;)

Yes, I think there are better options for that kind of money. You can either:

1. look for an Ibby (SRs, BTBs, EDBs - all good lines with pretty high quality instruments for the money);
2. look for a (used) Warwick Corvette (the real deal, not the RockBass): cheaper than any other W, but still having a lot of growl.
3. wait a bit longer (word of the mouth is "end of 2009/early 2010) for the new RockBasses; those will have a slimmer neck and superior components (Just a Nut & 2 piece bridges, W logo on headstock, and so on) - they'll be basically MIC Warwicks, and not just some cheap versions of the real Wicks.

Ya, lol, I'm always in my local Guitar Center trying stuff out. I played an ATK which was good, and I wanted to try a Schecter Damien DV-4.

And Yea im gonna try to get my hands on a Vamp, before I make a final decision on it.

I played a Vampyre 5 string for 3 years in my Death Metal band and it was a great bass. It had a great tone and balanced perfectly never gave me a bit of trouble. I really hate I got rid of it when I got my real W but sometimes it is what it is. The tone from the jazz humbucker is interesting and gives it a really harsh bite. If you get one of the newer batch it also will have a just a nut and a popout backing cover. the 2010 will have a just a nut 3 and 2 piece bridge as said before. I am sure if you look around you'd find a used one really cheap.

Great answer. In fact, every post could be answered with that pat phrase "Try Stuff Out" which is good but defeats the purpose of discussion.

Also, I doubt you can find a Rockbass Vampyre in stock, at this moment.

But if you can, "Try it Out":D
