I've met guitar players who call this 'a bassline' and can't stomach anything else. I play in an old timey roots band and get the big stinkeye if I play anything other than that -- I'm going to use your växelbas term from now on though. I'm the växelbas player!

Two-feel is a jazz term for the bass playing half-notes. This could apply, but doesn't imply root-fifth. I think in English this would be a combination of the terms two-feel and alternating bass (or root-fifth). So two-feel alternating bass or two-feel root-fifth.

In Swedish it is called ”växelbas”

Actually, if you play the classic marches by J.P. Sousa, Karl King, Kenneth Alford, etc., you are exactly right. But you must add the transitional measures of 3-5 and the scales' connecting notes to the next chord change, etc., along with the flourishes at the end, like 1-6-5-3-1, etc. And let us not forget the famous "break strain" or "dog fight" sections, like the low brass in Stars and Stripes Forever. Yes, I also play tuba and sousaphone, and have since the autumn of 1976 when I started as a high school freshman in marching band, through college, grad school, and now community band.

Ha - I have played Stars and Stripes forever on the alto sax, tenor sax, tuba and French horn. Tuba was just down beat quarter notes if I remember correctly. Been a while, but the french horn part sucked. I don't think Souza like them.
