of course, it's your bass to do with as you please, but I wouldn't mess with something as rare as an Roscoe Beck.

I just had to take mine back into the shop. My repair guy let one of his minions do the setup/cleaning right after i got the bass. The action was like fretting a bow and arrow. I wasn't very happy with the setup, so I took it upon myself to try and adjust the bridge and truss rod to where its more comfortable..... It's become painfully obvious that i need to learn more about doing a setup. At least on this particular instrument.![]()
It's worth it and easy to learn to do a proper setup. My guitar tech was very impressed with my RBV, as he thought it was capable of lower action than average for a fretted Fender bass and said the neck was a very high quality. I tend to agree--even before it was set up when I bought it from PBG I remarked about the low action, and yet it doesn't buzz. Really nice. I bet yours can be set up the same.
Yeah, thanks, I like those telecaster knobs too - believe everything's stock. Reading through the posts on this thread I see a lot of folks have trouble with the truss rod on this bass. Looks like the previous owner of mine did as well as the truss rod opening has the only wear I can see on the guitar. Murphy's Law - the day after I get this wet dream a tube goes on my amp!Bachlover - your is hot! I like the chrome dome knobs! Mine is a '97 and it has the black plastic "F" knobs. Are yours stock?

The tonal options are just unreal. My MPJV satin gets close to the full humbucker sound, but it's slightly less articulate than the RBV.
Yeah, seems like a clear cut example of change for the sake of change. I wouldn't want to alter that baby not only for esthetic but mostly for tonal reasons. "If it aint broke don't fix it!" Not only are these "aint broke", but in my mind can't be improved upon. Looking forward to the weeks ahead to discover more of just how true that is.
I haven't googled this Bill Lawrence guy, but I'd assume if Fender used him in conjunction with Beck to design pups specifically for a bass that was supposedly 10 years in the making, he'd be no hack.
Chef, you are right. I wasn't thinking clearly. Next quest: find a 5-string jazz bass neck that mounts up on the Roscoe and de-fret it. Not messing with the OEM RBV.

Sorry I know I'm posting too much, just curious about what your fav settings are on the RB?
It's SUCH a versatile bass it's hard to pinpoint one fav sound, just curious if there's a setting I haven't explored yet!
My default sound (which I stay on the majority of the time) is as follows:
Vol up to 10
PU selector in middle
Tone almost all the way off (maybe up to 2), push/pull in DOWN position
Neck pu in Series mode
Bridge pu in Single Coil mode
This gives me what I feel like is a great middle of the road, deep, Jbass-almost-Pbass sound, awesome fundamental and solid bottom. Great all-around tone. Gives perfect booty support in a live or studio situation, perfect for backing vocalists,
My other favs are as follows
(for the record, my vol STAYS at 10, and my tone pretty much lives low, never up more than 3 or 4, but usually down to 2)
-Soloed bridge pu in Series (best Jaco tone ever in a live setting)
-Soloed neck pu in Single Coil (best throwback tone ever, especially if slapping n popping in old school hip hop style)
-Both pu's on, neck pu in single, bridge pu in series, Tone knob pulled UP (killer modern quasi-Jaco jazzy fusiony clear tone. This setting absolutely SINGS in the studio)
Notice I don't use parallel mode hardly ever, hmm...
Any others? I'm always on the hunt for good tone!
