Roscoe Club

Here’s my 10th Roscoe. Just shipped out. It looks absolutely stunning. I don’t know how I’ll be able to sleep until it is safely in my arms. Keith just astounds me with every build. Incredible. View attachment 4581874 View attachment 4581875 View attachment 4581876 View attachment 4581877

Wow Ryan I saw your bass a few times in the shop while it was being built and can honestly say as great as it looked every time I saw it, the finished result is truly amazing. I’m sure you are beyond pleased and as usual it was worth the wait.

Wow!
Killer top and the finish looks like glass!
What preamp did you go with? What’s the Mini-toggle switch for?

Keith is a master, isn’t he? The beauty of these things just cannot be overstated.

I went with the Roscoe/Bartolini pre. It’s just the way to go on these basses, in my opinion. The toggle is a 3-way mid switch, which I always opt for on a custom build. If what Gard told me is correct, I was the first one to order a Roscoe that way. I think it was 2009. I’ve seen it on a bunch of Roscoes since then (including one I bought used back in 2017), and it always makes me smile to think maybe I had something to do with it.

Truth be told, I copied the idea from an Elrick I had at the time, and ordered my LG (6113) the same way. I remember it adding some time onto the build, because they had trouble figuring out how to do it!

Yeah. I’ve had the 3 position mid switch on Elrick and MTD’s. Adds one more nice midrange choice.
Congrats on a beauty!

Man a Roscoe really is a beautiful thing.

I have moved to fretless as my #1, but have a fretted LG which is now my 'backup', I guess? Whenever it's in its case I think, man I should just sell it cause I don't really need a $2k+ backup. But then whenever I take it out of it's case I'm reminded why I bought it in the first place.

I think my strategy is to do nothing rash, for now. I don't need the money, I just don't like having more than I need. But maybe I need this bass. I've sold a few basses in the past I thought I'd miss, and never did. But I get a feeling I'd regret selling this one.

Have it defretted?

Oh I use it. But a number of cheaper fretted basses could work just as well for what I use it for, therein lies the conundrum.
I’ve had this debate with myself many times. I could get by with less. Do I need this? Well, the way I see it all my basses are paid for and I wouldn’t really make much selling them. So why not have nice things? If you aren’t going to lose your house or car or job or wife…keep it.

Good to hear that perspective, thanks. I guess that can take a shift in mindset. You work hard and sacrifice to get ahead, it can be difficult to then switch that off and just enjoy the finer things you've worked towards.

But also you're right, I won't make much really downgrading to a FSO, for example, so why not keep the nicer bass.

I tell you what. Roscoe makes the best fretless bass there is. So if you're sure you are going 100% fretless, than sell/trade the fretted Roscoe for a fretless one. Or, just get a fretless Roscoe, sell the Fender, and have a "matching pair" or Roscoes, fretted and fretless. You could have it defretted I suppose, but in the end you're probably better off just getting a bass that was born fretless.

Why if they love that particular bass? Also, prices of Roscoes are much higher than when that bass was made. The bass could always be sent to Roscoe for them to do it, or a great local tech could manage.

Yep, always an option. I debated sending my Century 5 to Keith to try and get it to sound more like a jazz bass. Just decided to keep it the way it is and get another bass for my jazz needs. Didn't want to mess. with the mojo I have with this one.
