Roscoe Club

I have made changes to my Roscoe with Nordstrand NJSF Pickups with Aguilar OBP3. I have been using DR Sunbeams for years and love them but with this setup, the Sunbeams seem tonally to have an enhanced upper mid which I found annoying. I decided to try a set of Pure Nickel strings so I bought a set of Fender Medium Pure Nickels Strings from BSO. I really like the tone from the strings but the tension is pretty heavy compared to the Sunbeams. Is anyone else using Pure Nickels, what brand and how is the tension/feel?

Gard,
...Maybe you've finally gotten tired of me and hit ignore.
Aside to Gard...
For some reason, he's flying the 'BANNED' avatar. It's confusing and disturbing.
I donno if he's trying to be clever or what... He actually has a profile page, which none of the actually BANNED folks do. So maybe there's some problem with his account.

Gard - please find another avatar unless this was some kind of temporary infraction issue. Some of us out here in Roscoe-land feel anxious when our lifeline is interrupted...

I have the Fender nickels on one of my basses. I really like them. I wish they made 5 and 6 string sets. As far as tension, it's all subjective so it's difficult to make suggestions. Another set that I like (on some basses) is the Carvin nickels (made by Labella). I'm not sure which Labella set would compare.

Yeah, I wish Fender had a pure nickel B string, I used the Sunbeam B. I was surprised volume wise it matched really good.

Sunbeams are my new favorite string!
I am a big fan of Sunbeams and have used them for a few years but for some reason with the Nord NJ5F pickups and the Aguilar OBP3 on my Century V it produces an upper mid twang which annoyed me. On my old CS4 the Sunbeam 100-40 strings sound amazing with Roscoe/Bart pickups and Aguilar OBP3 preamp. I love the snap and low tension.

I just had sunbeams on my Roscoe and they were good....but I put some Fodera nickel on and they were better but a little muddy....then I put some Fodera stainless on and they are without a doubt the best strings for my Roscoe! They are so nice I cant stop playing it!

BTW I love old Fender strings too....the new ones not so much...I stock piled the ones they used to make in Mexico before they started sourcing them to d'addario.

THIS..... is the Roscoe that I am betrothed to..... I can not begin to explain how much I love thee.

Can someone tell me why I can play my Roscoe better then any other bass? I have had like a hundred basses in the last 2 years....and I just love the feel! Its a 4 string LG3000...It just plays so perfect! My Fenders feel like Squiers now! It just fits my hands perfect...is it the 24 frets? or the small necks with perfect action that make them so easy to play? It sounds pretty good but I still prefer a passive tone....I wish I could get something that played as nice as the Roscoe and sounded like a Fender.

not exactly an LG3000, but it goes passive

Do Centurys go passive??? I did want one with a bigger body and was going to get a Century next! I think as soon as my 75 p bass sells I am getting a century....I want a more plain one...my lg3000 is koa and spalted fingerboard...a little too flashy for me...but I am a tad afraid if I sell it I wont find that feel again....I think Century uses the same necks...

It sounds like the new Aguilar electronics in a body of your choice would get you as close as Roscoe gets to a "jazz" bass. Like the bass in the above link but with a pair of jazz pups instead of the P/J.

if you go with the aggie pickup/preamp combo it'll go passive. it's volume(push-pull active/passive)/blend/passive tone/stacked bass & treble (OBP-1 preamp, boost only). I believe they use the same inherent neck shape with minor variations due to the hand shaping. sounds like you want a century standard with the AGV-PJ/JJ electronics package.

Guys, just a quick note for everyone. Gard is on a temp-ban (ran afoul of the CUP) and will be back next week. If you need him (or sent him a PM and need a response), call the shop.

I do recommend if you go with the JJ setup, have the pickups placed in the standard position used for the Soap Bars to retain more punch. I have done a lot of testing with different pickup/preamp combinations and IMO, for a Roscoe with the 60s position JJ, Nordstrand NJ5F and the Aguilar OBP3 using Fender Pure Nickels has really put some punch back in my bass. I will get my first live test this weekend but on three of my amps this bass is sounding really good.

You can get a passive Century but the Bartolini Pickups have a low output so you may want to go with the Aggie DCB-D4 pickups. When I had those in my bass and flipped the switch from active to passive there was just a very slight drop in volume whereas the Roscoe Barts fell off the cliff.
