Roscoe Club

Is anybody getting any kind of communication from Keith these days?

Nate (@Mighty Thumb) dropped in last week
I was indeed there last Saturday. It was a quick visit as he had a mountain of work to do and I had a lot of driving still to get where I was going. We have exchanged email in a thread about my current build over the last year. Sometimes responses are a little delayed. Understandable knowing how busy they are. I should be back through there soon to pick up my finished bass!

I don’t need the LG.
I don’t need the LG.
I have that tone already.
I don’t have a fretless.
Eye on the prize, no matter what “too good to be true” deal comes up.
Fretless is cool.
Roscoe fretless is the coolest.
Eye on the prize.
Stick to your plan.
Didn’t you have a LG4 already, and couldn’t get rid of it fast enough?

(Says the guy who just talked about 3 times trying to be a 6 string player :rollno:)

Sigh. I am just not getting a response from him.

Long time listener, first time caller...

I follow this this thread frequently, even though I'm not a Roscoe owner. I enjoy the banter here and have long played the home edition of the "Will Steve buy that bass or not?" Silently cheering each anguishing decision. Thank you for one of the most entertaining threads here at TB. I appreciate Joe's recently trip down memory lane hearkening back to the days of Greg doing rapid fire recordings of the "Roscoe of the Day."

Now I do have a question about the fretless that Steve is eyeing. What is your take on that bridge? The B, E, and A strings seem to take a very awkward bend at the saddle and the gap between the B and E seems off (or it could be a bit big between the E and A string). Is it just me?

Duh, I forgot about the better pics they sent Steve. Looks like the ball ends aren't entirely in the slots, and the b string isn't slotted right on the saddle... I'm not the biggest fan of the Hipshot b because I think it's a tight squeeze for the lower strings, works better with taper/exposed core strings, ime...

Thanks. I haven't used a Hipshot Type B before and couldn't quite tell if this was a B or a Gotoh flavor, but the alignment certainly looked off. Compared to your image, the fretless bridge is different. Maybe a variant in production eras.

Glad you're enjoying the antics. I have a B bridge on my fretted century 5 as well, and the B string is a pretty sharp angle but it doesn't effect it in any way. The B on this one looks like it isn't sitting in the slot exactly right.

It's still there. I just spent $1,400 on wireless gear and about that much on a present for my wife, so with car insurance still unresolved, I'm not sure if I can swing this. It's still available, so the "lots of interest" I was told about hasn't resulted in a quick sale. I'm guessing everyone thinks it's a little high, and 'tis the season so money is probably tight. But a call and a reasonable "lowball" offer may be in the future.

Okay. So. Welcome to the club!

First thing first- no one builds a better fretless neck than Keith Roscoe- especially when he's using the maple/purple heat/maple combo with a dymonwood fingerboard. Mike Pedulla came close- but he retired because he knew he'd always be second best :)roflmao:).

The bridge situation: Keith has a Roscoe spec Hipshot bridge that follow the radius of the fingerboard. Some folks have gotten rid of that bridge in favor of a standard hipshot A in order to get the action lower. Other folks send the bass back to have the neck pocket scribed for the same effect. Some people do both. Fretless basses love low low action- especially Keith's- the neck is so stable that you can really dial in the growl and buzz that you want. So I am willing to bet a paycheck the person who owned this bass before put the hipshot A on but kept the Roscoe spec bridge.

The gap is fine. The strings can probably be seated a bit better.

But overall, if you want one of the best fretless basses built this is your opportunity to do so.

FWIW, my first Roscoe is a mid 90s fretless LG-3005. It's only enough that it's got gotoh tuners and a wilkinson bridge. I don't dare change them out. It sounds too good as is. And it plays like a million bucks. It's my main bass and I'll never get rid of it.
