The only mod I want for my Roscoes is to find someone who can put a nice clear coat on my standards so they don't get relic'dThe search goes on. That is the only thing that I am not totally satisfied with.
Oh cooooool!!!!! Thanks man!
Yep, like who ever played my former Century V (just bought it back, BTW), left several belt buckle gouges in the back…. I have instrument I've used for years and beside few scuffs and light dings, they still look pretty good…..and I play them a lot!As long as you don't beat the snot out of your basses Scott, a bit of attention to maintaining them will keep them looking just fine for a lifetime. To get as "relic'd" looking as that sunburst, you would have to intentionally damage them.![]()
I am very very kind to my instruments and treat them all like I paid for thembut the way I place my right thumb on the bass when I am playing causes my thumb nail to dig into the wood and my nails are not long at all.
Gard, is the "oil" finish a catalyzed urethane like Mike T. uses, or is it a true oil?
I have that same issue. There's a divot above the bridge pickup on my Roscoe JJ that's pretty impressive. But at the end of the day, they're tools. I never intentionally would hurt my basses, but I'm not going to baby them. This is last year, it's deeper now:

I am not a fan of the wear being visible at all. I will baby it and do the maintenance. My Roscoes are tools but they were also investments of my hard earned money. Call me silly but I like my stuff to look nice for a long time. Their is an infamous bass maker in the north east whose basses I drooled over for years. I finally was able to get one of his basses new. I had a similar incident where my fingernail was denting and wearing into the wood. I called him for suggestions on how to avoid that. He told me not to let my fingernails touch the bass. I thanked him and sold his bass here on TB the next week. So far I have managed no wear on my Roscoes. But still have been gigging them regularly.![]()
It's in the September 2011 issue with Victor Wooten on the cover.
