Roscoe Club

Hello guys, does anyone have sound clips on a John East uni pre + barts combo in a Roscoe, or a stock demeter+barts (since Roscoe tuned demeters are no longer made). I'm trying to get that modern yet crisp tone. Any other preamp + pickup ideas are also welcome!:)

I've got one sound clip with the Demeter and Roscoe Barts. I'll try to upload it but last time I tried, the new format of TB didn't support mp3 files.
PM me your email and I'll send it to you.

I love my Roscoe SKB 3005 so much, It has a sadowsky preamp and Aguilar DCB soaps, it sounds amazing, amazing, I get so many compliments wherever I play BUT, the 35" is really bothering my left hand, the extra stretch makes my left hand cramp up......it does not happen with my other 2 basses (Sadowsky 5 string 34" scale, modern and jazz)
I reached out to keith and he can build me a new 34" neck, but It will cost above $2k when shipping costs are added in (I need to ship the bass to him) - I would love to find a 34" SKB, they are so hard to find! and having Keith build me a New One (custom) is def. out of my budget! I would need to sell all of my basses.....
My dilemma.....
A) sell the SKB, wait for a 34" to show up, grab it before someone else.
B) Sell the SKB, save up, order a new one (probably will take 1-2 years to save up and build time).....
C) Order a new neck ($2k plus) and maybe try to sell the old neck?

What would you guys do?

Thx

Joe

Hey Joe!
I'd be a bit cautious in selling your beloved 35" scale Roscoe and buying a Roscoe 34" scale. You may find that it doesn't really feel any different to your left hand than the 35" scale.
And I I'll tell you why. Usually what really happens is the nut stays in relatively the same position (because the neck pocket didn't move) and the only thing that really moved is the bridge relocated an inch further from the end of the bass. Yes, you will still get frets that slightly closer than a 35" scale (~1/16 less width at the first fret and gradually less as your progress up the neck) but you may still experience the same discomfort as your 35" scale.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction! :)

Let me add this. I felt the “reach” of a Roscoe 35” at first as well. An SKB. Then I tried my friends Century. The strap button is at the 12th fret, while the SKB is around the 14th fret. The basses hang a little differently. It was enough of a difference to sell me on Roscoe Century bodies. I have 2. They feel the same as a 34” to me.

Maybe fall in love with a Century 35” instead. Not as “iconic” as the SKB or LG, but they are amazing basses. You can find 35” Century 5’s for sale more easily than a 34” SKB.

Something to think about.

Time for me to post this image once again. This is two Roscoe necks, one 34" and one 35" shot from above the first fret. THAT is the difference your left hand is dealing with.

I know you love your Roscoe but if I was you I would go play as many different 35" scale basses as you can and see how they feel to you. Right now I'm playing an LG and yes, they do hang differently than a Century. So the geometry has a lot to do with it. All that being said if it's giving you trouble to play by all means don't play it. It's not doing you any good so selling it and waiting for a 34" is the way to go. IMHO.

Hey Roscoe fans, last year I talked myself into selling a Roscoe Century 5 with an incredible bubinha top and I've regretted it ever since. I ended up with a maple top LG that I like but am not in love with. So I'm thinking I would like to trade/but/sell it in return for a darker, figured top one, anyy body shape, carved top and not stained purple or anything egregious like that. Here's the bait.

For something like this:

Edit : OK that didn't turn out right. I have the maple one, I want something similar to dark one. +/- cash, around $2500.

Well, life happens. Looks like I may have to sell one of my Roscoes. My new LG3005 JJ has easily become my #1 so it’s not going anywhere. I will be posting my other in the LG3005 in the classifieds later today or tomorrow.

Someone will get a really nice LG with straight pickups. One of my favorites! Unfortunately, my quiver is full!
