Roscoe Club

Hi all! I currently have a Nordie pre in my Roscoe and am considering trying out Nordstrand Zen Blades in there. Does anyone know if our Roscoes come with copper shielded pickup cavities? Also, does anyone know if it’s an easy swap? Thanks and all the best!
When I demo pickups for fatbasstone.com we’re moving through them pretty quickly. I actually go back to re listen when I’m curious about a certain pickup. I do remember the Zen Blade being softer and less aggressive than the Big Blade, while also being super even and dynamic. My buddy Jake Wolf always says that those are his favorite pickups with a preamp, because you can eq them to be anything you need. I’ll direct him here to see if he has more to add.

Hey guys. The “pope” preamp is the flexcore, which is manufactured by Trickfish. It was designed by Mike Pope who used to be a partner in the company. Trickfish sells the flexcore and the IPA which are slightly different but share a lot of the same DNA and sound similar, but have some different components. There is also the new J-core plate preamp for jazz basses. Lots of info on the site trickfishamps.com.

I have done a swap recently for zens with a nord 3b pre in my lg3006 with stellar results. (it previously had barts, then aguilars after). Highly recommended and imo fits the bass better sonically than anything else ive tried!

Nice! Did you have to add any shielding or run into any issues? Also did you set them up in series or parallel? Any other tips? Thanks for your time!

Two more questions for you:
1. Does the tapered B-string b-have on your Roscoe?
2. Do you know if these strings have a round core or a hex core?
1. Yes, the B string is tapered. Interestingly, a while back someone who worked at Roscoe told me that they avoid using tapered strings. If I remember correctly he said it caused intonation problems. But I haven't noticed any issues.

2. I don't know the type of core.

Thanks! I remember Keith saying something like that about tapered strings. It doesn’t seem to be affecting your intonation. Your sample sounds great!

I typically like the flexibility of round cores vs. hex cores, but I am always willing to try another string type to see if they dethrone my current favorite: Dunlop Superbright stainless steels.

It’s only a problem if you run real low action and don’t lower the pickup enough (increase the distance from the strings). Aside from intonation issues it also can cause a strange wobbling sound. But I’ve actually had to address this issue on a Music man HH model with non-taper sound strings due to the high output MM pickups. I had to lower the pickups a really long distance from the strings.
