LOL. And I always have to say.... Keith is as humble and nice as he is talented. Truly a gem of the bass community. Great getting to finally meet my North Shore Cajun Brutha! We will have to do that again Gard.... Crawfish next time !

SKB Custom 5 Serial #6574 Exhibition Quilt Maple top, Mahogany body, Faded Blue Jean finish, Bartolini pickups & 3-band preamp, Maple/Purpleheart/Maple neck, Exhibition Cocobolo fingerboard, Abalone 12th fret inlay, Graphite nut, Gold/Black hardware

Man that finish is incredible! Looks like it would taste like cotton candy :)

Dang nice pair! Love that one on the right (well..love them both, actually). How do the Aguilar pickups differ from the Barts?

I have exclusively played my maple Roscoe, Roscoe Barts/Aggie OBP3, for four years. It took a little while to adjust to the voicing of these pickups, but now I love the huge warm focused tone. The Aguilar DCB’s are voiced different; brighter, more even mids and lows, more ‘ping’ on top when needed. The DCB’s get aggressive when you dig in while the Barts stay warm and compress slightly. A totally different flavor with the new bass, but I like it. I should have a few gigs this summer with my ‘loud’ band to see how it sounds in the mix.

Based on your description of the Aguilar DCB's, they sound like they'd be right up my alley.

I just had Greg order me a new set of pickups for my Century J. I went with (following his advice) the Nordstrand single coils for it. Still deciding on a different preamp, thinking strongly about the Nordstrand 3 band for it. Or an Aguilar OBP-1 or 3.

SKB3005 Tune Up

My SKB3005 has a maple burl top on mahogany body with amber finish and a 5-piece wenge wedge neck with wenge fingerboard. It came with Roscoe Barts and an Aggie OBP-3 preamp and played wonderfully but there was a bit of darkness and compression to the sound I didn't care for and the lower mid frequency point on the Aggie just didn't seem right. I made these three changes:
  1. I had a pair of small capacitors added to the OBP-3 midrange switch to raise the lower mid frequency from 400 to 550 Hz as shown in midrange option #6 of the Aguilar OPB-3 wiring diagram. This 550/800 Hz switchable mid has been more musical and useful.
  2. I switched the Roscoe Barts out for a pair of Aguilar DCB-D4 pickups. As stated above "The Aguilar DCB’s are voiced different; brighter, more even mids and lows, more ‘ping’ on top when needed. The DCB’s get aggressive when you dig in." This was the change I was hoping for; excellent pickups.
  3. I put on a Medium 125 set of DR Sunbeams Nickel Plated Steels and made a few minor adjustments with pickup and string heights to get a good even response across all 5 strings.
This instrument sings, growls, and has a more dynamic and open sound with better mids. Thanks to the Roscoeheads on this thread for your help. I really like the way this sounds and have a renewed passion to play it.

Well...I went half-way. I got the pink top down, but only an absolute NUT would add a pink fingerboard to a bass with a pink top! :woot:

Speaking of which...I think JOME77's next build should be a SKB3005 with pink ivory top, pink ivory fingerboard, and...for that matter...slap some of those pink DR strings on there as well. Done and DONE!
