We only use Honduras or African Mahogany. No "substitutes". :)
The thing is, "African mahogany" is sometimes used to describe wood that isn't at all mahogany (quite aside from khaya) - even by some well-respected builders. People think they're getting real mahogany but they end up with a wood that only looks like mahogany. Glad to hear that Honduras is what you generally use.

We have had one board of the African Mahogany/Khaya in the shop, that's it. The rest of what we have has always been Honduras. We have used the African for a couple of demo guitars so far, and that's it. Every bass we've ever sent out (to the best of our knowledge) has been Honduras Mahogany.

BTDT. 9/64" I got mine in a set at Lowes and it was not expensive - works fine.

Correct: 9/64".

One caveat: watch the shank length on your allen key - depending on a few variables, you MAY need to shorten the "short arm" of the key to fit correctly.

Sometimes, the truss rod can be cut just a fraction of an inch toward the bridge, and this brings the nut back to where a standard allen key won't quite make it into the nut because the bend is touching the body in the dimple. It's a fairly simple fix, if you have access to a grinding wheel: you just grind the "short arm" down a bit at a time, until it drops into the truss rod nut. .

FWIW, it is not something that happens regularly, but being aware of it is a good thing, DON'T FORCE the key into the nut, if it doesn't easily slip in, you could damage the nut.
