From what I remember, it was a hit and miss situation with the D'Addario long scales working or not working. A lot of folks, including me, never had a long scale set that didn't work - a lot folks ended up with the ones where the taper was before the nut.
with the standard length D'addario strings, they changed the wrap length around '12/'13 i believe from 36.25" to either 37.25 or 37.5"
when i had my century i bought a few sets of standard length D'addarios and they all cleared the nut by about 1/2". so if the B & E fell short, it was probably before they made the change, and if it was after, people could have gotten some NOS sets with the old wrap length.

You've sparked a memory though I thought it was the reverse of what you said - that it changed from the longer to the shorter, not shorter to longer? Reason I say that, Bass Strings Online currently has long scales listed as 36.25" from ball to taper and super longs as 38".
