Fingerboards. What are your thoughts?

To be more specific, how much does the Wenge fingerboard on my (ash body) Century Standard 5 Plus contribute to its signature voice?

How would the same exact bass but with a maple fingerboard differ in sound?

What about the 'dual color' boards such as on the 4 string pictured a few posts above? May just end up with an LG just to have something different :)

One day I WILL have a 4 string Roscoe to mate with my 5. Just trying to figure out what options to look at while I figure out how to scrape up some money!

There is no fretless like a Roscoe fretless. The growl and MWAH are unique.

For electronics, I like the Bart preamp. It adds just enough compression. The body wood will "flavor" the tone. Mahogany for a deeper/fuller tone. Ash will be a little more aggressive and open.

The Diamondwood is top shelf for a fretless fingerboard.

The only advise I'd offer is to not scrimp on the neck wood for a fretless. Stiffness and rigidity make a difference (in my view). Gard will guide you through specifics, but I like "some" Wenge in the neck.

Joel, I'd definitely go with humbuckers in the standard Roscoe location for the best bridge pickup style of fretless tone. I know the thought of having a fretless with J Bass pickups in the Fender locations would give maybe a more versatile bass but I find when I play fretless I really only want it to do one thing well and that is to have as much fretless MWAH as possible. The standard Roscoe pickup locations will do this much better than the J locations, IMO.

First let me say Hi! again. I have not been a round for a while. Secondly, I must confess that being a Warrior guy since 99, I thought I was in Heaven. It was not until I played my LG 3005 that I realized that I was missing something. Glad to be back.

On another note, if anyone is looking to trade/sell their Roscoe 5/6 string, I have been trying to get my hands on another Roscoe as I clean out the old bass closet.

That bass was the best bass I have owned. Best fretless, best Roscoe, best 5, best sounding, best playing, top 3 best looking. That's why I'm having Roscoe build me another with the same specs - except a quilt maple top. I know it won't be the same, but it's as close as I can get. Absolutely amazing bass. I was an idiot to sell it.

I believe that the first person to request that pickup placement had the initials JB.

Donno what this pickup arrangement is called (anybody know?) , but I like it. Roscoe Bartolini pickups and Bartolini 3-band pre with mid-selector, blend, and master volume. I love it. Diamondwood fingerboard. No wenge in the neck but it's been really stable and I can't say it's lacking anything. This is my bass (now) but not my photo, and so not my socks either...

Nice! I wondered who snagged that one.

...... Nice socks too! Shame that Armybasses feet weren't symmetrical about the body of the bass though ........... it would have looked better! :D
