Okay, so two used Roscoes didn't work out for me, due to a neck issue on one, and cosmetics on another, so who knows what happened with their pasts. However, I pulled the trigger on a new SKB Standard Plus 5. I showed Gard pics of the one I initally chose, via Bass San Diego, and changed my mind to another from them. She should be here tomorrow!
Btw, my first Standard Plus 5 (used, and in my avatar) is staying put...neck is puuuurfect.

That's really weird. A few days ago I started a post with that sentence then, decided to come back to it. Apparently, when I responded to songwriter21's post it autofilled that one line. Like I said, weird.
Anyway, I guess I'll continue with that thought. A couple of weeks ago I got some new ear molds from JH Audio. They are 8 driver IEM's with fantastic clarity and nearly flat. The other day I was playing my bass through the DI on my Zoom B3 listening with though the in-ears. I was just using one of the amp models and thought that everything sounded fantastic. The setting were perfect and it was just what I thought I wanted my bass to sound like.
But, being that I am a constant fiddler, I went to change some settings on the pedal. However, the sound was not changing no matter what I did. I quickly realized I was actually running PRE eq on the DI! I thought, "wow, this sounds great, it will sound even better POST eq." Well, it did sound a little better, mostly just louder. I matched volume on the amp model with the volume of the pre DI and they were nearly identical.
I then tried another test. My live rig is just an Ampeg SVP Pro preamp DI'd into the board. I tried my bass through it both pre and post eq adjusted for volume and they sounded nearly identical as well even though my eq settings are quite extreme (Bass 4 o'clock, Mid 3 o'clock, Mid selector at 1, Treble at noon and, Ultra High pressed in). I A/B'd the Ampeg with the Zoom and, once again, they sounded the same. I even A/B/C'd the Ampeg, Zoom and my Genz GBE1200 through the DIs and AGAIN the bass sounded mostly the same.
Now, for the ultimate test. I plugged my bass straight into the IEM transmitter. Once I adjusted for volume it sounded the SAME AGAIN! What I have discovered is that most amps and preamps have a certain eq curve built in and it just gets in the way for me. So, unconsciously, I have been adjusting the eq's of my various preamps so as to make them sound flat and let the natural sound of my bass come through.
My SKB already sounds perfect and doesn't need coloration. Fortunately, our PA is pretty darn flat as well. So, I am now seriously considering just running my bass into a DI then to the board with no other eq or preamp and leaving the PA's eq flat except to change for the room. This is a big deal for me since I am a constant tweaker and always looking for the perfect tone. I've now realized that my bass (and fingers) already have that tone and I just need to find the most direct way to get that to FOH
I've noticed a few things in relation to tone:
First, less is almost always more. Especially when it comes to your amplification's EQ settings. My dream is to one day do what Joel just described and never look back.
Second, remember where you started before you start fiddling; once you find the "perfect" settings, go back to "zero" and listen - bet you are either right back where you started from, or you like "zero" better.
Lastly, the more you "chase" it, the further away it gets - we have a local guy, good player, nice dude, has several of our basses. He has had a habit over the ten years I've known him (I've been here HOW long now?!?!?!
) of getting a new bass, playing it for a few months, then convincing himself he needs a different preamp. Getting the new preamp, loving it for a few months, then convincing himself to get another "better" one. Loving THAT one for a few months, then putting the original preamp back in his bass and realizing it was what he was looking for to start with. Now, when he gets a new bass, I just tell him "You've already put 3 different preamps in your bass, and you love this one. Right?" 
The most effective tone control in your entire signal chain is always the same: your right hand.
Second one? Blend control between the pickups.

I have noticed that the Reply box remembers what you have typed into it - on each page - pretty much forever.
You have to clear it out explicitly for it to go away.
I've found much the same...
I run my LH1000 at what passes for flat with its Fender tone stack (2-10-2) and pretty much the same sound (obviously different knob positions) on my GK MB500Fusion. I do have a Darkglass VMTD when I'm trying for that 'Cream-at-Winterlands' overdrive/distortion sound, but pretty much, I just like bass-flavored bass.
It is so nice when the sound you want is exactly what the bass you've got it happy to give ...
