Roscoe Club

OK guys and girls it's pretty much official. The next Middle Georgia Bass GTT is scheduled for Saturday March 18th at The Assembly @ Warner Robins GA. (6040 Watson Blvd, Byron, GA 31008).
It's the same location that we've had it at for several years (Thanks Dennis AKA bassWR).

There will be plenty of nice basses, amps and Georgia Bob BBQ.
Well announce a few more details over the nest week or so. Let us know if you'll be attending so we can make sure that we have plenty of food and drink.

It sure would be nice if Gard could come and bring one of those new Roscoe Classic Jazz basses!;)
Dang, I'm gonna have to miss this one. My son has a 12:30pm basketball game and I have a gig that night. Too bad, because I'm getting my fretted CS5 Plek'd in couple weeks, and you guys haven't seen my fretless yet.

I'm looking for some advice on round-wound strings from the Roscoe hive mind. A month ago I put a set of DR Nickel Lo Rider mediums on my wonderful SKB 5 string (Roscoe Barts, Bart preamp) and I'm not feeling the love. They're stiffer than is comfortable for me (for comparison, I like the low tension of the TI flats I have on my P bass and my fretless J). The finger style sound is good, but I'm in a band now where I'm doing some slapping for the first time in years, and with these strings the sound seems to vanish in the mix when I go to the thumb.

I was thinking about trying some Sunbeams, but I also have been reading good things about the Dunlop nickel SuperBrights. Does anybody have experience with either of those on a Roscoe, or other string advice? Thanks in advance for whatever you can share.

Dunlop SuperBright Nickels are the only strings I'll use on my Roscoes. They make a Roscoe sound like a Roscoe. They are very clear sounding with a nice crunch in the midrange and none of that over the top zinginess. Stiffness wise they are at the other end of the spectrum than LoRiders. SuperBrights are very flexible like a round core, but with the stability of a hex core.

Looks like it's a bad time to have for most folks.
Sounds like this one is going to be canceled folks. Maybe we'll try it again in the fall. :)

I agree. SuperBright Nickels sound amazing on my Roscoe, and most other basses I own as a matter of fact. BUT... I do not like the way they feel and sound after they break in. Which is after a week or so. They stiffen up and have an unnatural GACK to the mids IMO. Can't explain it but I know I dont like it. I am not rich so cant afford to change strings all the time.

I have been using DR Hi Beams for a long time. My 5 (soapbar Bart's and Bart pre) wasn't doing it for me so I decided to try something else. I tried DR Flats. Nah. The local store had D'Addario NYXL Nickle Rounds. Roscoe uses D'Addario as stock (I think) and lots of people like D'Addario so I figured what the heck.

Love them! Full, nice bottom, highs not as bright as the Hi Beams, good mids. Put them on my 6 as well.

Hi Beams are my favorite string by far. BUT>>> Not at first. They need to smooth out tonewise and that takes awhile. Too slinky and bright with a mid scoop initially. Couple weeks of gigging and they are absolutely perfect. Not only tone but the feel. No strings have this beautiful tension and feel to me after they have been on my bass for awhile. I know they are stainless but they dont feel like any other stainless string I have tried.

Actually when I sent my Roscoe to be Plek'ed, the DR's have been on her for about 8 months and I had no intention of changing them but had to since it was a new setup and required. Now the DRHB's are settling in again and its nirvana to me.

Never tried NYXL's. May have to check these strings out.

I kinda get the feeling NYXL are what the now-discontinued FlexSteels evolved into.
I could be wrong...

I keep thinking my next set of 'different' (non D'Addario EXL-170-6) will be the highly regarded Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats -- but still no 6-string sets nor singles... So I'll restring with EXL170-6 for my semi-annual restring before the Bass Boot Camp in a week or so...

DR Sunbeams are my string of choice. I used to use Marcus Millers and Hi-Beams, but the Sunbeams improve on them in two areas (for me): one, they seem to have a hair more low-mid information in them. It's subtle, but to my ears, it makes a difference. Two, they laaaaaaaaaassssst! And when they do start to die, it's a slow, subtle thing. I've never regretted not changing strings with them.

I would add that they have all the benefits of low tension - which makes them play like butter like any other, IMHO. On my non-Roscoe sixer I can get very low action, smooth feel and great sound without any of the cons usually associated with low tension strings.

I have custom Sunbeams made for my 5 String SKB and LG. I use 40-60-80-90-110, they sound great and I can bend the pee pee out of them. These are probably the lightest strings you can use on a Roscoe and you will have to loosen the truss rod.

I am thinking about trading my Roscoe 6 for a Roscoe 5, but I have no fivers for sale/trade.

How long have you had your 6? Give yourself some time to grow into it. Someone said that to me somewhere this week. Made sense. I have had a 6 a few times but it only lasted a few week. I convinced myself it was overkill and sold it. My wife says this one stays so with that motivation, I'm gonna play it and see what happens. I may or may not use the C, but that's fine. It a great sounding "jazz" bass B-G so what the heck. I have my 5 to fall back on for things like the potential cover band where I know muting the C all the time would be a pain. For church, where I'm sitting by the drummer and playing church stuff, the 6 is a great bass - C or no C.

Just a thought.
