He's my Roscoe. It's an LG4 standard with a Bartolini T4CBC.

Sorry Gard. Been playing it since I got it. I wanted to spend some time with it and put it through it's paces.

I had not used that pickup before and sort of took a "leap of faith" with it. I'm quite surprised at the amount of volume, clarity and punch it has. Everything that some people claim Barts don't have. Even though it's a different piece of ash and completely different pickup, there's still an underlying tonal quality to the bass that was present with both setups. Sort of an "acoustic" and "open" quality to it.

I've read a number of posts from people, talking about certain basses they own that they have to play everytime they walk by it.
This is one of those basses.

Satisfied? You betcha.:bassist:

Side note, I'm curious to see what you have planned for the "donor" body.

So the new band got together last night. The female lead is gonna be just fine...and fine. Normally we're IEM but we just used whatever at the music store where we practiced - guitar player works there.

Anyway, had my 5 with soaps. Used a GK head - little one but not the 200 - and a GB 1288 cab.
Bruno mars, G&R, Reba, alanis, lady Gaga, etc. wasn't sure about my sound. I'm thinking it was the GK as ive used this bass at church and its been ok. It was a little thin sounding at times. Like on Treasure (Bruno) my G string sounded weak when popping. Guitar player noticed. No one else.

Not panicking yet, but I wasn't getting the sound I'd like. I run my pre pretty flat. Sometimes favor the neck pup. Do I try more aggressive EQ? It sounded pretty modern for some of the stuff.

Yes, obvious answer is buy a classic custom Roscoe.

On a side note - I may have to pick up a keyboard to do some synth bass. Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, some 80's and 90's pop with obvious synth bass parts.

I'm not too familiar with that cab, but the voicing on the GK could be most of your problem. The good news is the EQ on them can be set to remedy that, for the most part. Try cutting the bass and treble a bit and see if that helps, to start.

Second, on the bass for a lot of that material I'd solo the neck pickup, and keep it panned centre for others. That and a little bit of low-mid or bass EQ onboard should get you where you want to be more or less. I don't think the bass is the issue, in any case. Lots of other variables to change in that rig before I'd look at the bass, given what you're working with.

No apologies, I figured "no news = good news", but it's always nice to get confirmation. I really dug the tone of it myself (playing "upside down" is one of my more obscure skills - I've actually sat in with a band on a lefty's bass for a tune or two, and didn't suck! o_O )

We're eventually going to add a bridge J pickup to it, and a 4th control. I'm sure it will find a good home. :)

Low mid is your friend (as Jeff mentioned already). Pull your midrange control "up", and boost until you start to have more presence in the mix. The WORST thing you can do in this situation is go all "smiley face" with your EQ, all clank & bump will not help you stand out in a mix like that - but a good bump around 250 Hz will work wonders: the kick drum is usually around 100 Hz, the E string on a guitar is 300 Hz, so there's a big "hole" in the frequencies in most bands right at that 200-250 Hz range, and you should use that to your advantage.

Good luck with the synth bass parts - I prefer to use my bass with a bit of auto wah, some distortion, and maybe octave to "fake" it, but I am starting a project doing a lot of 80's era pop stuff (Duran Duran? YES! Paul Young? HELL YEAH!!! ), and I may get boxed into a bit of keyboard bass eventually....bleah....

I'm with Gard on the synth bass. With various combos of my bass octave deluxe, SA multiwave distortion, and envelope filter, I can get some great synth tones that my band usually likes more than what is offered on the original recordings.

Why is it the bass players responsibility to play some keys, can't the singer do this. Back in 1984, I should say way back in 1984, I bought a Korg Poly 800 just to mess with around the apartment. I could play tri-chords ok but not a whole lot more. The band I was in found out and I was asked to play it some so I learned VH Jump enough to fake it but when they asked me to learn Dolby's Blinded Me with Science, well it was time to find a keyboard player. Oh, I could also play Cold as Ice.

I'll try some EQ. Never usually pull up my mid know so I'll give that a shot. I'm sure it's the amp as it sounds good at church. Not looking for an excuse to get a bass. No reason this one can't work.

As for synth bass - I may try some pedals but I never seem to have much luck. A little 2 octave synth would be easy to use and haul around. And while you can get close with effect, there's nothing quite like a synth for some of that stuff.

I have a little time today - we're off for hockey tournaments and kids have a play date - so I'm going to go try some pedal combinations and see if anything floats my boat.

I think that passive single pickup is a pretty solid tone. I'd imagine a passive setup with two of them in the typical Roscoe position would be a great sounding bass.

Being a lefty, I've done the "upside down" thing numerous times. Anytime I've gone to try a bass at GC, they never have the lefty version in stock, so I have to try out the righty. It always throws people off when they see me do it. It really rattled the brain of one GC employee when I was playing a righty fretless 5'er.

I thought that's what you guys were gonna do with it.
Don't forget to post pics when it's done.

That's really special. Love the single pickup!
Thanks!
It's certainly not your typical Roscoe. The single, neck-biased humbucker and passive electronics is not your typical Roscoe, but I still feel it fits into the "Roscoe" tone a bit. It's big sounding without being "muddy", at least to my ears.

I know it's an oddball, but I tend to march to the beat of a different drummer...
...and by drummer, I mean a small monkey with a pair of cymbals.

How long have you had your 6? Give yourself some time to grow into it. Someone said that to me somewhere this week. Made sense. I have had a 6 a few times but it only lasted a few week. I convinced myself it was overkill and sold it. My wife says this one stays so with that motivation, I'm gonna play it and see what happens. I may or may not use the C, but that's fine. It a great sounding "jazz" bass B-G so what the heck. I have my 5 to fall back on for things like the potential cover band where I know muting the C all the time would be a pain. For church, where I'm sitting by the drummer and playing church stuff, the 6 is a great bass - C or no C.

Just a thought.
Agreed, @SteveC.
I am more likely to sell/trade one of my LG 3005 Customs since I have two especially with one of these available in my color and maple neck (Roscoe Classic Jazz 5 Bass - Tobacco Sunburst, Maple.)
