Roscoe Club

Hey guys - I'm still alive, just REAL busy between getting my house in Greensboro ready to go up for sale and spending time in lovely Fuquay-Varina with...well...what to call her? "Girlfriend" is facile, and not accurate - it's a lot more than that....and since I'm still technically married (NC has some borderline Byzantine laws on divorce - frankly, they're STUPID, but gotta navigate 'em to get on with things - "the only way out is through"... :p )...but she is my life-partner, however you slice it. :) Working on getting things cranked up for "Gardfather 2.0" in Raleigh-Durham.

Contrary to Worldeater's comments, F-V has three good (I've been to all of them) breweries, multiple small venues, and is about 15-30 minutes away from all of the cool spots in RDU, so it isn't THAT bad of a place to live - it reminds me of my early life living in Slidell, LA, and being 30 minutes from the French Quarter in NOLA...I could go hunting or fishing all day, go home, take a shower, and be at a gig in under an hour from getting home.

On the topic of continued Roscoe stuff, if I can help, I will, always. That said, I'm already looking at some other gigs, and may be on board elsewhere before Christmas.

In any event, I'm still here, even if there are periods of my not being quite as HERE as usual....those will go away before the end of November, for sure.

Hey guys, just put my mahogany Century Standard 5 up in the Classifieds. Great bass but the headless is all I really want to play anymore.

If I could a) afford and b) justify it, I'd have already bought this bass before it hit the classifieds. It is a true killer, with one very special twist you can't get on a "production" Standard or Standard Plus. (I'll let Dave spill it, if he chooses to do so 8-) )

Wow! Sounds like you've already taken a big bite of the F-V apple. Who knew there was stuff there, besides cookie-cutter housing subdivisions (Rush reference intended)? Glad you're enjoying it.
People on here have been giving eulogies for you - LOL. It's good to see you pop up and comment so they all know you're still on Earth. How many Roscoes did you escape Gboro with? :)

F-V IS a smallish town, no question, but there is stuff to do there....and for me, it's far enough away from the noise & congestion of RDU but close enough to get there quickly enough. It will be an adjustment from Greensboro, which is a "perfectly sized city" in my opinion - big enough to have stuff to do, small enough that even at the worst time of day, you're 15 minutes from anywhere in town. It is a 'burb for sure, though, while not a "cookie cutter" Subdivisions type - much more rural in character where I'll be moving to, houses on an acre lot, etc.

"I'm not dead yet!" Eulogies are absolutely premature. Two Standards, and I'm happy with that - they're both workhorse instruments that cover all the requirements. That said, there will be others eventually....but we will leave that for another time and place. ;)

I'm considering installing :nailbiting: a different preamp in my LG 5'er with stock Bart. I've read in this thread that the Demeter gets the higher reviews, but also that it may not be possible to buy one now.
So, I looked out on the Demeter site and see the BEQP-1 preamp. Is this not the preamp that gets the great reviews?

The BEQP-1 is the same as the Roscoe except for the switch and you can get an Aguilar 50K dual pot to stack the bass and treble. James used the model of the Roscoe preamp to make the BEQP-1. James sometimes has the stacked pots in stock but I have ordered and installed them after the fact. The Q switch on the Roscoe doesn't make a huge difference and James Demeter just permanently set it to the best setting. Joe and I have a great relationship with James along the way and have been able to get him to build the Roscoe version with the switch. I have had both with and without the switch and if I were going to change out to the Demeter on my SKB, I wouldn't bother drilling the switch hole as I like the way the BEQP-1 sounds straight from Demeter.

Thanks for your reply!!!

I had called Demeter Friday and we talked yesterday. James filled me in on the Demeter:Roscoe relationship and about the BEQP-1, and that he could build it however I wanted, which would be without the switch (Don't want to drill into this one!) and like-Roscoe knobs config.

I'm still on the fence with this, but this GAS to do it is real!! Must be the retirement boredom setting in plus all of the exciting posts about exciting/interesting things to do your bass(es)!!

Anyone know about the quality and tone of a Roscoe Century Standard Plus Cocobola Top with Aguilar P/J pickups and OBP-3 preamp. Has anyone played or heard this configuration. Would this be a good first Roscoe for me?

I’m back!

The tops on Standards are so thin that they won’t impart much change to the tonality. It appears that the body is swamp ash and the fretboard is wenge so, expect the tone to be on the brighter more aggressive side. And, there’s not much better than the Aggie P/Js.

For anyone who knows this bass has the OBP-1 installed with a tone control. I've never had a 1 band premap so does anyone have and feedback of how that preamp will do and if it sounds good.

it is a two band preamp with bass and treble boost but the knob configuration of 4 knobs makes me think either it has a Passive tone control or a Mid control. If a mid control then it is not OBP-1.

Many Aguilar preamp configurations have a active/passive tone control wired in. Both of my Mayones with OBP-3 were wired this way. I find it a bit unnecessary when in active with preamp activated. I pretty much left the tone control all the way open. However, when running in passive having the tone control is indispensable.

It has a full time tone control that works not only in active but also in passive. Any idea what that will do?

It will make me want to drive into the city and buy this myself. Also, if it is in fact a 'full-time' tone knob (Which I didn't know was possible on an OBP-1), it will roll off the highs when in passive or active mode. I'm not a huge authority on Aggie pres, but I have them in several of my Roscoes and basses in my past.
