Roscoe Club

Good thing I only play Roscoe basses!
My main bass. I have a G&L JB-2 strung with flats that was a gift that I use for jazz and have been using as a “Pino” for the new trio (basicaly a John Mayer cover trio) but the Roscoe P at Rocket Music keeps tempting me. I don’t know why it’s still there.
Part of me has trouble spending $2,500 on a P bass as it’s just a passive P bass. They can be had for 1/5 that price, but...I have been so happy with all the Roscoe basses I’ve owned - some more than once - that I just don’t know what to do. There’s a really nice F#^~^r Select at a local shop for $1,350 that plays and sounds like a P bass. But...I feel like I’m cheating on Keith and Gray as they’ve helped me through many Roscoe builds and purchases over the last 6 ir so years.

Because it's waiting for you...
Part of me wants to believe that. I haven’t had much luck with P basses or 4 strings. But lately, listening to and now playing stuff like John Mayer, Ray Lamontagne, Jack Johnson, and other “Pino” type stuff, the flats and the P thing is more tempting. It doesn’t work on my Century at all. The feel isn’t there. The flats aren’t there. Just not the right vibe.
Then again, the new group isn’t gigging yet. I don’t use multiple basses for gigs and I really need my 5 for the cover band. Church I could get by with a 4 but some low stuff is nice.
So, is it justifiable to get an expensive bass for a garage jam band that may never play out? We are so close to being debt free I hate to delay that for such a selfish item. My usual dilemma.

Wrong forum to ask that question I know.

If you can't ask that kind of question in this forum, then what's this forum for??

The answer to your question is: Yes it is!!! WHY? You only live once, and he who dies with the most toys wins!!! And you are a winner, right?

Here you go!!! Something just to spice things up.

Funny that all the "non-Roscoes" and "not-a-Roscoe lust" posted in this thread make me appreciate Roscoe design, features, and aesthetics much, much more. .

There are Roscoe basses, and then just everything/anything else. .

Maybe post the other stuff in the "Not-a-Roscoe/everything/anything" club (NAREA club)?

Dang Steve! Did you have too much caffeine last night?

And I know who Keith is but who the heck is Gray?

Just kidding Ray! I'm sure that James will turn it around in a timely manner.

Back to flat wounds on a Roscoe ........

I installed the TI Jazz Flats on the Roscoe STD JB and did an A/B test on playing over the same tune, the ABB's song Mellisa. I always like the sound of the bass on that tune and thought that it would be a good one to record. The bass is pretty hot in the mix but I wanted to be able to hear the sound of the strings.
There wasn't as much difference as I would have thought (originally) but IMO one does have a bit more of a low end muted sound. Not totally sure which I prefer though.
See if you can guess which recording is the EB Cobalt flats and which is the TI Jazz Flats and let me know which one you prefer (and your opinion might be "install the Nickel RW's " :)).
Of the two, I wouldn't be able to tell which one is which but on the other hand, I can say that I prefer the sound of the strings on Mellisa II. It sounds fuller and punchier and those might be the Cobalt flats.

What is the scale length of a Roscoe SKB 6 string? 35 or 36”?

Usually 35", but 34" is also available as an option.

** EDIT - that applies to their 5-, 6- and 7-string basses. Their 4-strings are usually 34", but 35" is an option.

I've used Curt Mangan strings for the last year along with my Pure Blues. Very good strings made right here in the US. I had a artist that used them and Warrior basses told me about them.
Brady Muckelroy is a fb connection of mine who is a great luthier here in Texas and he swears by Curt Mangan strings. I had never heard of them until he said he puts them on the basses he builds

Never heard of Curt Mangan strings until they were mentioned here in the Roscoe thread. I guess that I'll have to try a set on one of my basses (just in case they are the "holy Grail" of bass strings).
They look to be almost double in price for what I pay for Roscoe Daddario's so they'll have to be significantly better to sway me.

I tried a set of Mangan nickel plated rounds a couple of years ago. They are good strings. Everyone has their favorite string, and mine is the DR Nickel Lo-Riders. I still like the DR's better. They are worth giving a try, and I like to support guys like Curt.
