Roscoe Club

They're not special...
Truss rod is 9/64" - Hipshot bridge saddle adjustment inhex screws are 1/16"
I got my set at Lowes for about $10.
Depending on how the trussrod notch is made in your individual body, you may need a shorter 'leg' on the Allen wrench; mine didn't...

Yep. Keith said that over the years different luthiers that worked for Roscoe installed the truss rods slightly different. The result is some are installed deeper than others (at the adjustment route). Just be careful when trying to insert one. If the truss rod fitting is really close to the end of the neck you can easily scratch up the clear coat in the routed area while trying to get it into the rod fitting. If you can't insert it without getting the entire wrench into the route, cut/grind some off of the wrench (and good luck with that! Those bad boys are some kind of hard steel!)

Devon is easily my number 1 for total value and then Roscoe. The only problem with Devon is he does building on the side and it takes a long time to get a build done. Waiting isn't my strong suite lol.

Tell me about it!!! I'm on the waiting list, since 2016, for a Wyn build!!! I'm so glad I decided to search and find a used Wyn to ease that G.A.S.

Wyn has about 181 customers waiting on custom builds!! To my understanding building basses is all he does, too. I hate waiting as well!
I ordered a PRS Semi Hollowed body, Single Cut guitar from Sweetwater. They didn't have any in stock and I was told it would take about 4 months to build. So, I agreed to that and paid my $. I waited for about 3 of those 4 months and called to check on the shipping date. I was told PRS was behind in their schedule and it would be several more months!!! I cancelled that order.

Maybe that's why he named the company Wyn ........

He kept hearing customers say "Wyn am I getting my bass?"!!!

I know, I know. His middle name is Wyn. But that might just be a coincident.:D

Shane,
If we hear of a nice Custom up for grabs we'll let you know. Rocket still has a couple really nice Customs for sale. You should give him a call and work something out. Greg's a great guy to deal with.

Move a bass to the cart to see the sale price.

Can't believe that I'm saying this but I'm back on the trail of trying a couple new strings on my Roscoe's. The reason is primarily because of the sound of some really broke in DR Hi Beams that were on a friends Curbow 5 (that I played last weekend). Wonderful bass and very unusual construction techniques (head stock consisted of ~.06 maple veneers glued together to form the head stock and pat of the body; parallel to the finger board in lieu of Kubicki's method which is perpendicular to the finger board). Enough of that though ....
The bass sounded so nice and organic (warm with lots of really nice lows mids and highs). The Curbow had Bart JJ pickups and I believe a Bart pre. The owner couldn't confirm if they were SC or DC Bart J's but he did confirm that the bass had DR Hi Beams installed.
I seem to remember Jon (Packman) stating that he used those (and I remember how nice the tone was on a few of his recordings). Any of you guys using the Hi Beams on your Roscoe Customs with Bart/Bart combo's?

Next question, any one playing a Roscoe fretless with the DR Sunbeams installed? DR claims that these really work well with fretless playing. I may just have to get a set of each on order.

Still loving the sound of the TI Jazz Flats on the Roscoe JB STD (totally old school and LOVE the slippery feel). Just looking for some variation in tone with the STD fretless and fretted Custom.

I should know by now ...... Always do a search before posting.:)

DR Sunbeams are my string of choice. I used to use Marcus Millers and Hi-Beams, but the Sunbeams improve on them in two areas (for me): one, they seem to have a hair more low-mid information in them. It's subtle, but to my ears, it makes a difference. Two, they laaaaaaaaaassssst! And when they do start to die, it's a slow, subtle thing. I've never regretted not changing strings with them.

Might have to give the DR SunBeams a try.

I used to use Hi Beams on my Bart/Bart Bass. It’s not a custom but I used them for a long time. I recently went back to “stock” D’addario Strings. I like both. I think it sounds more like a “Roscoe” with the D’Addario’s but the Hi Beams were “my sound” for a long time.

I have tried Sunbeams on several fretless basses and they did not do it for me. My Century 6 fretless has D'Adarrio XL's on it and sounds killer. I recently acquired an Ibanez GWB 205 and it came from the factory with the strings Gary Willis uses....XL's.

I've tried a lot of strings on many basses but seem to keep coming back to D'Adarrio. Chromes if I want flats (but also have used and liked La Bella flats) and XL's on most of my basses. I had a set of TI flats on my Fender Roscoe Beck V for many years and loved it. Put a set of XL's on it and it sounded so much better to me.

It is like ice cream and women. We all have our preferences.

Jon Packard is one of those guys who, like Jaco, always sounds great. The tone really is in the hands. Local player/teacher Jim Kalson is like that. He has several basses and they all sound like him. His strings include XL's on some basses and G. Gould contact core stainless strings on his ggi6. Still sounds like Jim when he plays.

Strings are an interesting and relatively inexpensive thing to explore. Unlike upright bass strings where a cheap set is about $100 and a great set can be near $500. Most of us jazzer's use Spirocores because they sound great and last for years.
