Roscoe Club

I’ve been playing my Roscoe 5 string and comparing it to my oldest 4 string, I’ve noticed that somethings are just easier to play on the Roscoe. I’m not sure if it’s because of the lower action or radius/profile of the neck. Has anyone else found their roscoe to be noticeably easy to play? I’m wondering if I bought a Roscoe 4 string, if it would have the same feel (magic?).

I have never played a 4 string Roscoe but you are right about the "magic".

The volute becoming standard on the "custom" happened sometime early in 2013 (I think) or a little earlier. I ordered my custom Walnut century in the summer of 2013 and it came with a volute.

Time sure flies Joe.........

MOP may not be the only thing they run out of occasionally. The signature looks to be an actual signature. It's usually a clear overlay that goes on the front of the headstock.

Playing my fretless 5 again today at church. I try it to play favorites, but it’s hard to beat this bass. The Classic P is amazing. The Century 5 fretted is equally amazing and has been my main bass for years. But there’s something about the fretless. Growly, woody and such a great neck. Mahogany with a maple top, diamond wood board, Barts. Just a fantastic bass.

Time does indeed fly JR!

I can’t believe that it’s been 7 years since you had that walnut bass built!

Time does fly. It was 8 years ago last week that I went to NC to pick up my first made for me Roscoe at the GTG and have a lesson and attend master classes - and a few meals - with Jimmy Haslip. What an amazing coupe of days.

Been on a string search lately...here’s my path:

Stock rw strings>Chromes>Sadowsky Blue Flats>Sadowsky Black SS 45-105 rw’s...success!

Sadowsky Black ss rw’s are inherently darker, more nickel-like (vs Sadowsky Blue ss rw’s), and last a very long time...

P solo’d, vtc turned down about 85%, provides a super nice ‘flats-esque, more fundamental-type’ P tone...

This P4 (alder/pau ferro, passive) has a very wide tonal range, with sustain for days all over the fretboard. :)

At first, I thought the 18mm was too spacing. But now I feel like the nice low action and tighter spacing feels "faster". Switching back to 19mm makes me feel like I gotta all the way across town to the next string. I'd like a 4 string Classic to match it, but the classics are only 19mm. So I guess I could get a Century 4 with 18mm?

I normally like Nickel strings, the Black labels sound like they'd sound similar but probably just be harder on frets? What about the Blue label SS?

The Blue Labels SS are very bright, typical of what you’d expect with SS...last as long as most brands.

The Black Label SS are somewhat unique, ime on three different basses. I can eq them on my preamps/vtc brighter very easily, but controls staying the same, switching from Blues to Blacks...the Blacks top end is rounded off somewhat (n-o-t dead/still very lively)...and they last longer than any SS rw I’ve tried. I prefer them over nickels...string noise similar to nickels, but ever so slightly more top end “sheen” than nickels...

First set I tried, I thought maybe it was a bad set...but after three sets/basses, I realized no fluke—actually prefer them! I’m a flats guy generally speaking, but find the Black ss’s can give me a more fundamental flat-esque tone + a very ‘normal’ bright rw tone, just manipulating the vtc...ymmv, of course.

I might have to try a set of the black SS strings on my Roscoe. Never tried a set of Sadowsky strings.
