S/D-85: Tasty clippings from Corey's Box

Hey Ron - was just reading in an old thread about Rat mods and saw a post from you about the FX Doctor Bass Adjust mod. I'm sure you've moved on to other dirt now, but what did you think about that mod? Worth 25 bucks? I have a US Made Rat2 without the 308 chip. I really like the way it sounds, but there's the low-end cut issue so I'm thinking of sending it to FXdoctor.

I can't recommend FXdoctor enough, He did work on a couple of my rat pedals, and it always came out great.

I like the bass adjust mod a lot, my main tone in bongripper for a few years was a 91 reissue big box rat (with the LM308) and the FX doctor bass adjust done to it. It's currently the main sound for our guitarist now, as I sold him the pedal when I switched to the Demon King.

Cool, yeah he seems like a good guy/company. Mod prices are reasonable compared to some others.

I'll have to shoot them an email next time payday rolls around.

Thanks!

Portal is great, I don't listen to them as much as I should.

My guitarist really digs them, first explained them to me as a death metal band falling down a flight of stairs.

i think their old stuff is more death metal influenced. theres about 30 seconds of any death metal on vexovoid, its just scary weird black metal with dive bombs everywhere and the creepiest vocals ever. they rule.

So I'm putting my p bass body up for a jazz body.

I'll probably not bother upgrading the pickups, but I'll do BEAD with chromes, I'm thinking of ways to wire it, I want tone pot bypass or no tone pot at all, and the ric bridge switch and series. Gotta figure out a nice way to get that done. I still got a ric-o-sound jack maybe I should put it to use.

Use the spot that would be occupied by a tone control for a pickup switch instead, is my suggestion. Much more useful.

I guess I never put much thought into the genre classifications of this corner of music.... I get bored by alot of doom, definitely swing more towards stoner rock verging on 70's-style psychedelic. Kadavar is one band I was happy to discover that cops the 70's thing perfect.

Otherwise I listen to alot of Sleep, Acid King, Kyuss/Queens, etc. I hate telling people I listen to/play "stoner rock" as it carries an obvious connotation thats not work appropriate, so in public me and my guitarist have called it "groove rock."

Heavy Rock is the tag that I use. People seem to get that. Way too many people think stoner rock means jam bands and that's not what I'm trying to convey.

In my head I'm thinking volume, pickup switch, ric cap switch maybe a couple cap options and the series switch can be added if I drop the jack on the control plate and use the ric jack. Chrome covers too as I dig them and they don't inhibit my playing style.

It's the maple neck with white binding and pearl blocks so I'm thinking another white body or natural but maybe sunburst.

just funny how were all different. kadavar playing for 2 minutes is more boring to me than listening to Evoken play one chord for 12 minutes lol.

bands like evoken just create a really cool atmosphere thats more interesting to me than "a cool riff". thats why portal is so cool, its gross and not played too precisely, but when i listen to vexovoid its like theyre creating one giant ugly atmosphere for 35 minutes. its like pressing play on some weird horror movie in the dark.

i want music to scare me lol.

I agree with alot of this here.

It is crazy just how different everyone's taste is.

Then again I spent most of my day listening to Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, St. Vincent, then Portal.

I'm not a fan of the "stoner rock" title. I don't really know where it came from. To me what is defined as stoner rock should be called heavy rock. Which is different from alternative, metal, rock etc.

Having said that I don't think our band woukd really be considered classic stoner rock anyway so I never describe it as such. So i just say heavy rock which can mean anything really..or my favorite, high energy doom. But that only works with people who know what doom is to begin with.

Being cheap, I can't decide if I should just leave the old rounds on my bronco, or get chromes. There's a vicious hit to the upper area 6 inches long down the horn. I can't tell if half the poly paints gonna snap off or the horn. Good thing is I can just transfer my guts to a new one if that's the case.
