Keep the SUB love coming! I'm still enamored by the beauty of our Sport Utility Bass!

I spent lunch at the local big music store, Long & McQuade in Vancouver (terminal and main).

Had a really interesting time looking at the musicman basses there and also overhearing a pro bassist raving about a 5 string stingray, used, for more than $1000 and how he has to buy it (he was talking to his girlfriend/wife).

I would have talked to him about all things sub just for the fun of it but big loud confident brawny hairy bass players scare me (i'm such a nerd/geek by comparison to most bassists LoL).

Anyway I looked at a few of them. Mostly were classics (although not called classics on the descriptions, they were 2 band slabs with mutes). Mostly pastel types of colors, nothing natural or with wood showing through on the bodies.

Remember I own two 5 string ebmm slo subs and grand total of them is around $1100 - for both together.

Each of the 5 string classics at L&M were ON SALE for $1800. each.

They have beautiful flamed maple necks and headstocks. Nice! but most folks never see the neck.

They have chrome covered 2 band eqs plus volume and output jack. so do mine.

They have the stingray style egg shaped pick guards that are so sought after. so do mine.

They have 5 string EBMM SLO alnico pickups. so do mine.

They both have rosewood fingerboards. So do mine (well fretless is Pau Ferro just like it would be if they had a fretless classic there).

They both have 5 EBMM open gear tuners plus a string tree, all in chrome. so do mine. ok in interest of accuracy, I'm not sure but maybe mine are matt metal not chrome. can't recall.

They both have 9 volt battery preamps. so do mine.

They both have truss rods adjusted by a wheel with holes in it where body meets neck. so do mine.

They both have optional string mutes. Ah snap!

so for roughly $4000 after tax I could have bought two classic 5s and gotten pastel colors, flamed necks with flamed headstocks, and mutes.

however for roughly $1100 used (no tax) I bought two sub 5s and got charcoal (fretted) and wine vomit purple (fretless), black necks and headstocks, and I have to palm mute.

The action is far better on mine after adjusting them myself than those in the store.

nearly $3000 difference for two basses that feel, play, sound, and in most ways look identical other than black paint where wood shows and imho body colors that are absolutely NOT worse than stingray classic colors.

Subs ROCK!

whoa, that refinish is.... nearly impossible LoL (I mean. it's a sub, at least a sub body, but wow)

How the heck did you get the headstock finish so perfect looking and where did you get the decals for the stingray from? (I don't think they sell them from EBMM officially?)

And the body is also amazing looking....

I would swear that's a classic 2 band other than the bridge. But then again, EBMM subs basically ARE classic 2 bands LoL

Thanks Guys! At the time I did the refin, I was having a serious GAS attack for a new Stingray classic. I had bought the SUB sometime before that (priced very cheaply I might add, around $200 I think), and it was slighty abused, had a lot of scratches, but played really nice. I figured what'd I have to loose.

Regarding the neck refin. The decal came from a Guy that was somehow sliding under EBMM's radar, and selling them on ebay (tough chance finding them now). I basically stripped the neck very slowly and carefully using 320 grit with a foam backer pad by hand. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect, was hiding under the black paint, as I had read somewhere that EBMM was using blem 2'nd necks that had ugly grain, for the SUB line. However, to my luck and surprise, it looked great. I masked the fretboard and finished with a high solids automotive clear.
The body, was a piece of cake for the most part, as the really thick textured finish had protected it very nicely.

All that said, I still wished I would've kept it, as it was a labor of love, for sure.

I,ve played a classic back to back with my sub through the same amp and settings.
It was a lovely finished piece but.
Soundwise and playability it was the same which kind of threw me a bit.It did have mutes, apart from that and the price which was £2700 I was almost shocked but pleased at the same time.
The neck finish-just keep playing it and it will eventually wear through to the maple.
It,s taken me 10 years though and it,s in patches but that,s real mojo.
I like the finish by the way.
