Double Bass SAD! Ken Smith Fiasco!!!

Well this is the crux of it for me and it shows how TB has changed in the 7-8 years I've been here!

So I was proud to be insulted or sniped at by Ed Fuqua or whoever else was round here and I think people do need to be put in their place if they say completely ridiculous things!!

This is a safe environment - so Ken sniped you - it doesn't hurt, nobody will die - who cares?

Far better to get a "reality check" here - than embarass yourself in the real world, where it could mean physical harm, losing your job etc. - important stuff!!

I imagine TB as a chat at a bar - now if some know-nothing kid came up to an established local and started mouthing off - they would get more than "sniping" ...:hmm:

Wow. So much wrong here it's hard to know where to start. This is not a matter of me or anyone else being thin skinned. Unwarranted insults, mockery, and sniping are uncalled for and do spoil the fun for many. The operative word is "unwarranted." Ken engaged in this behavior when nothing ridiculous was said and when there was nothing about which to be embarrassed in the real world. I'm not talking about posts by "kids" or "know-nothings." There's no excuse for uncivil, rude behavior. No, I was not harmed by Ken Smith's words but as I said, he often poisoned discussions with his bullying. It's about discussions that should proceed freely.

...All I'm saying is, I deeply appreciate having pros and experienced voices here; but IMO their experience doesn't elevate them to some status where they cannot be questioned, challenged, doubted, or given a free pass to be rude to people who question them.

AMEN!

If his meaning had been clear, there would have been no reason for me to post the definition of slander.

It was unclear to you, apparently. Come on, posting the definition was over the top. That was quite unnecessary. I didn't feel the need to post the definition of the word "them" when you used it improperly. Let's get back to talking bass!

Wrong! Just more pot stirring. :rollno:

Funny, when someone makes a valid point, it's just pot stirring...HMMM.

Interesting how fast the response came too. By the time I had refreshed the screen, you had replied. Has someone asked you to be sentinel of this thread? You sure seem to be willing to challenge an awful lot without much substantive input of your own. Don't just be a neener-bot.

That someone is not you. You don't seem to have made a valid point. You just keep re-opening the wound with your sarcasm. Yeah, we get it. You don't like the mods' behavior. Suggesting they believe they are beyond reproach is wrong. It's not a valid point.

You're right. I'm not a certified mind reader. Words do have meaning. Slander is a very serious charge, especially if the person to whom it is directed is not present. How would you like it if someone accused you of slander. Would you "know" that they did not mean it?

Yes, I would know that in this context the word was being used incorrectly.

...In other words moderator status, right?
I don't look at mods as having elevated status really. They don't make the rules they uphold them. A member who has tons of knowledge but will take things personally doesn't make a good mod. Someone who can keep a level head and put things behind them makes a good mod.

I don't think of it as elevated. I think of it as even below us in a way. They are serving the forum.

KEN HURT YOUR WITTLE FEELINGS DIDN'T HE? That's why all the defense from you about how he was treated.

Your inappropriate extremist position seems to be that any offense taken to Ken's boorish behavior results from being thin-skinned. Such a ridiculous position condones any behavior regardless of how egregious. You assume that I am speaking only of myself. That's not the case.

Gee, I guess Talkbass hurt Ken's "wittle" feelings. He took his little ball and went home and you and others are whining about it. I'm one who is not! If Ken wants to come back then he will. Stop crying about it.

Ken's "little ball", as you put it, was actually a vast collection of knowledge that this forum is now without the benefit of.

We should all cry about the loss of such a valuable resource.

You? You are just whining. Even about semantics.

Waaaaaah.

You should apply your own logic, faulty as it is with regard to the matter at hand, to Ken's behavior. His got all insulted and left. How childish. I guess he was just too thin-skinned to stick around. Yes, I agree his contributions were quite valuable. In the end, their price was too high. This entire thread is populated with people like yourself who are whining about Ken not being here. You want him back? Why don't you communicate directly with him and ask him to reconsider rather than mourning your loss here?

Seems perhaps a lot of people don't believe, as you say, that the "price was too high". Some of us are adults, have a slightly thicker skin than you, and can stand the occasional jab without calling...enh, I think you know.

There you go again with your mis-characterization. It was not an occasional jab. It was far more than that as I and others have noted over and over. Look at his last post. It was far more than a jab. Hey, no one threw him out. HE LEFT! Take it up with him. As far as being an adult, I held my own with Ken just fine without complaining to the community-- like you are doing. Grow up! By the way, how about filling out your profile?

I guess the thing I don't get about this whole mess is how someone can get all worked up about digitized alphanumeric responses on a computer screen.

Sure, some of us post by our real names, others don't. But in the end, are there people out there really losing sleep over the fact that BassMasterX0$3Z called them a putz on a web forum? Come on, people. Lighten up.

I have a "virtual" knowledge of those with real identities. You can google names, read bios, listen to work, etc. Those without, you can't. So what. In the end if someone real or virtual is an a**hole, then they are labeled as such.

Life's too short. Ignore the a**holes, glean what you can from those that have something meaningful to say, and read the rest with whatever perspective you choose. You might get a laugh, you might roll your eyes, you might just move on the the next post.

You might even log off and go play your bass for a while. Imagine that.

Darn, sucked in again...

You do realize that you can be written up for your post, right?

You didn't obscure EVERY LETTER in your expletive. Look at my profile. I've been written up TWICE by an over-zealous mod for THE EXACT SAME THING YOU JUST DID.

Now, someone please tell me again how my points are irrelevant to why no serious professionals wanna stay here and chat with anyone anymore...please.

..and with that, he left.

:spit:

Paul, I appreciate your words and it is indeed a sad situation, it's sad when any member feels they must leave, and it's certainly sad when I feel I have to take action against any user.

You probably read this already, but this is where things ended up, and why, and where they are now:

I'm sorry 'the thread' as referenced above existed outside of forum rules. To all who want to see Ken Smith back, I'm sorry but I cannot play favorites and let some users bypass our usage agreement, whether newbie or pro, sponsor or no, I think we must treat all equally when it comes to forum rules. As soon as Ken let's me know he's cool with our usage agreement, he's welcome back here. I don't think it's too much to ask of any member, to not post hateful, hurtful remarks or other slams against any other user or moderator publicly. Mod/member complaints are always welcome in my email box, but after the original 'dirty laundry' thread went down in flames as an experiment outside rules, I say 'no more'. There are some strong words against Ken in this thread, as we open up this wound yet again. If Ken Smith does become a member here again, I'm confident that everyone who posted here will, going forward, show Ken Smith the same basic respect that we expect of all members.
