No, I was not. Apparently you feel there has been a substantial degradation since that time. Gee, was it paul's house then? Was "there" really "here." Past performance is not always an indicator of future trends. Then again, you can just hop in and set 'er for 1998. :)

Paul...I've read your original post and can't for the life of me understand why you would want to pull out of this forum. I suspect you may need the contact of so many people that look up to you as a musician (and a person) as much as we do you. Your input, whether specific to the discussion or not, was always eagerly read by all here. You and the rest of the wisenheimers (and I use that term respectfully)who populate this board are well respected and thought of highly. Don't let those who are less than tactful drive you away. The same goes for Ken Smith, Ray Parker or anyone else whose contributions here add so much to all of our "quests" to be better on our instrument. And if some of us get uppity, well, take it for what it's worth. I don't think anyone's reputation on here has gotten tarnished because of what someone has said in disagreement.

Just my .02, but like I said, it's a d*** shame that it's got to come down to this bull****.

After following the hundred sixty or so posts since Paul's initial post, I would have a hard time making a good argument for him to stay. I've seen a lot of semantics used to cover the extreme dislike (i.e. hate) of Ken Smith and anyone like him. For those of us who call ourselves friends of Ken, this does not seem at all like the friendly place it was when PW and I joined 5 years ago. Political correctness now appears to be the rule.

I don't know what my friend Paul Warburton will choose to do, but I choose to stick around now simply because at the present time there isn't a better place to go. If and when I find a better place (from my perspective) I will probably will leave TalkBass myself. It just isn't fun any more.

"Political correctness" can be abused; but that does not invalidate it. Guns don't kill people, people do, etc. There are huge flaws with any system of government, but reasonably non-tyrannical governments do historically "work better" in the long term than anarchy. Is it still just "politically correct" to avoid smacking your female co-worker on the butt and calling her "honey"? Is it still "politically correct" to avoid using racial slurs in public? Or is avoiding those actions just normal, proper, civil behavior?

Those who use the "slippery slope" argument need to step away from it, it is a fallacy.

I'm only guilty of silly posts.
Well, I mean to say, this Ken Smith thing has gone on a bit.
The events as I understand them are:
1) Kenny gets a bit rude to someone.
2) He gets reminded of the rules.
3) He throws a snot.
4) We all debate it with a passion.

Some say that Kenny should have a few extra privileges because he's an experienced (and very clever) guy.
Well, it appears that he is also a business man. Is he rude to his customers? Or is his work just so damn good that people will go to him regardless? I don't think I'd want to do business with a rude person. In my real life (away from this forum) my philosophy is to treat everyone with respect... to treat them as I would like to be treated myself. Talking of how smart and knowledgeable young Kenny is... remember that there are different types of intelligence, 'emotional intelligence' being one. Sometimes 'emotional intelligence' is called 'sensitivity'.
I always thought that this is a good thing for a musician to possess. Because I can be a 'dick' at times, I am very used to saying 'sorry about that' to people. It actually becomes easier each time you say it. The personal gain is that 'saying sorry' can make you feel good.
Sorry for being silly at times.

How would Mingus have gone over on talk bass? Do you think all of his posts would be nice? Would he be kicked off by the moderators?
Peter Kowald once got in a fight with Anthony Braxton because Braxton
Liked Wagner's music. Like most born in post-WWII Germany Kowald was very sensitive to things that both Fascist and German.
Braxton's reply was that the history of great music was not the history of nice guys.
I am not saying Ken Smith is as important as Mingus or Wagner but the world of music would be less rich without those two, just like it is talkbass' loss that we don't have Ken Smith.
I am someone who does believe in musical hiearchy.
I think Ken Smith or anyone else with his knowledge and experience should get more room and different treatment than a snot nosed kid.

On the road to 200?

My $0.02 on this subject: This is Paul's site, and his to do with what he wants. I personally have the utmost respect for anyone able to build and grow a community like this. For him to decide that the user agreements apply to everyone is within his right and completely acceptable from my perspective.

I have not been on this site long, but in the time I've spent here I have learned a great deal. Some things I did learn from Ken, and I value his experience and knowledge. With that being said, Ken made his decision and he is free to come back. His Talkbass status is in his hands. He "signed" the user agreement, as did we all.

Talkbass is bigger than one individual. The day it becomes about one bassist or one member is the day it loses its value.
