Sadowsky Pickguard Color Question

I just completed my 8 month modern wait, so I'm a pro now! And... I'm a former custom Fodera owner... so you Sadowsky guys are lightweights in the wait department... does that make you lightwaits?:D

Cool.... I'll just order the bass with the mint guard and a tort backup... then I'll have both looks covered!

Well, one thing I'm sure of through this... the fancy top with pickguard on a J Bass is definitely not my thing... especially with a 'classic' burst type finish.... WAY too much stuff going on... kind of makes my head hurt, although I can obviously see how some would like it. Thanks again for all the photo's... that cleared things up for me.

Have fun at your 'cab comparison hang' (I think that's today?)... make sure to post all of your impressions on the Sadowsky/TF cab thread.

It's on the top of my mind recently, since I am doing a little more freelance work now and I just took delivery of a new Skjold 6 string. As great as that bass is - and it is really, really great - I would never take it to a gig or an audition where I did not know the bandleader very well (Pete, if you are listening, I say this taking nothing away from your excellent work).

As you probably know, Ken, I also have a mint pickguard for my P/J 5 (in the non-reverse configuration), but I gotta tell you, I love the look of the tort guard so much (and the sound of the reversed-P pickup) that I haven't even tried out the mint guard yet! :eek: I'll have to do that, though, and snap some shots for you.

FWIW, here's my P/J 5 with the tort guard:

And as you recall, I agonized over whether or not to install a pickguard or not. ;) The nice thing is, with the guard, if you wanted, you could probably set it up as a P/J, if you got the universal route. Not that you would, of course. :p

That is a beauty. No, I am definitely not a P/J guy! Emailed back and forth with Kevin a couple of times. He metioned that they like the look of the tort with the traditional burst finish for rosewood or darker colored boards, and mint for the maple board models. That's where my preference is, so that's the way I went... standard ash body, 59 burst, birdseye maple board (not as over the top as a fancy wood top... but just a subtle little bit of 'boutique' touch without totally trashing the vintage look.. I hope anyway), and single coil J's! Cool!

Tom, Although your p/j is gorgeous, if I ever took the plunge it would be with a traditional P body. Just as a personal taste issue I think P/j's look more proportionate on P bass bodies. But I must agree that your suggestion of Oban 14 was an excellent choice. I did pull the trigger on another Sadowsky last week (gig bag).:D

I hear ya, but I just prefer Roger's J-style bodies.

Not that this is big news or anything, but just an update for those who helped my out on this thread. After emailing with Kevin and thinking about it more, I changed the Birdseye board to a standard board. Having the birdseye board on that very classic mint/59 burst bass also didn't totally feel right to me. So, I will get what will turn out to be a very traditional looking J with the wonderful Sadowsky tone and fit and finish.... cool!!!!

I could actually go with a Metro with this spec and save a bit of money, but I really like the lighter weight of the NYC's, what seems like nicer grain (in general) on the ash when a 'clear finish' is used, the graphite reinforcement bars in the neck, etc., etc. Subtle, but worth the extra cash to me (from my experience with my NYC RV5 vs. the Metro's I've played... surprisingly close, but that light weight really is something with the newer NYC's).

So, I'm two months into the 7-8 month wait. I'll post again in June:bassist:

Singles on this one... I'm trying to move it away from the RV5 I already have... which has a true Rosewood board, alder body and the standard humcancelling J's. I'm hopign the MV5 with singles and a lightweight ash body will sit right in between my very aggressive Celinder and the more traditional sounding RV5!

You saw my pic of Sadowskys. The my sub 8 pound Ash/maple with singles just kills. It is very articulate and sounds more aggressive then my Alder/brazilian rosewood. I played a gig with it last night, and the soundman could not get over the direct tone of the bass. I find that the singles really get a wider range of tones based on finger technique and attack.

You'll love that combination.

I finally got to compare it to a Celinder Vintage. The celinder was a little more out front, but just a little. I can't wait to check out the Update now.

I heard there will be no Celinders at NAMM.:spit:
