SBL: Quitting

Amen. Nuked Facebook a few years ago, and I'm over a week into disabling, but not nuking, my Instagram account. I don't miss Facebook at all and never did, but I'm a little jittery regarding IG. It's been very useful for getting to know like-minded synth folk and I'm missing that community.

What kind of synth stuff do you do? My band is kind of on the rock side of Synthwave. Other guys in the band are really in the scene.

I still have my FB account (for work purposes) but I haven’t been on it in around ten months. I just got tired of feeling frustrated with all of the stupidity and virtue signalling. It was depressing me so I just stopped. I’m much happier now. My only other social media has been TB.
When Talkbass went down I was in the wilderness, its my only social media.

I’m trying to get on that wagon but sometimes it’s pretty useful to gain some current event topics to talk to on dates or in random convos with strangers.

Did you know that Instagram is planning to hide likes on there next update?

Dunno 'bout y'all but I'm on Facebook (as well as Talkbass) every day. For me it's about connecting with family and friends. I can delete or block folks I don't want to deal with. It's as easy as that.

As for bass/music, sometimes you need a break. I quit a band last September. Just joined a new one.

DW, we have the same attitude about Facebook, enjoy the positive and block the negative!

I took my shot at seeking commercial success. I gave it everything I got, including a couple grand to record an EP (this was a decade ago, I am well aware that Things Are Different Now). Sales started out kinda slow, and then tapered off. I finally had enough of gigs where the band played three hours to five people for five dollars. I was embarrassed that I couldn't pay them decently.:D

It seems that what I am suited for is to play in a stinky little bar band. How am I like B.B. King? He and I both agree: Do it until you die.

Actually sometimes quitting can be incredibly powerful. Sometimes chasing dreams endlessly is not healthy and can make you lose sight of reality - the reality that you are probably not going to make it after 20 years trying, and you should probably quit trying and get plan b into action.

I have a few actor friends who decided in their mid thirties to quit trying to make it, got jobs teaching drama and doing private tutoring etc. It was the best thing they ever did, and it took a lot of courage for them to accept reality and quit. I also have a couple of actor friends in their mid 40's who are still getting rejected for things they dont even really want to do, and live in a bedsit still chasing the dream.

I don’t think changing your goals after a serious attempt is quitting. If you can honestly say you gave it your best shot, moving on to something else is perfectly honorable.
