SBMM Stingray Short scale

Hello all....Been on TB for years but rarely post.

I finally decided to try a short scale so I picked one of the white ones up last month. I'm not a maple fretboard fan so the blue was out of the question for me. Love playing this bass, feels very comfortable. Set up was very playable right out of the box and I did get a gig bag. Not crazy about the feel of the tuners(mine has a lot of play before actually turning) or the Ernie Ball strings so I will definitely be changing those out. All in all what a great quality bass!

One thing I've noticed.... my E, D and G string all sound loud while my A string is significantly lower in volume. Anybody else have a similar issue?

I had and sold a s-s Jag. Actually very good for the price BUT: Cheap pot's only did anything for 10% of their rotation; when I tried to get already acceptably low action a bit lower I gave up trying to turn the very stiff truss-rod nut for fear of breaking it.

As received my SBMM s-s Ray had virtually no neck relief, and too much string height at nut and bridge. I dialled in my usual 008" relief, dropped the saddles right down, cut the nut slots lower - perfect! Everything smooth and easy.

From my experience of many s-s basses across the price-range, I would say the tension is determined by the gauge and construction of the strings. The E string on this one feels just fine.

Buy it - but keep talking to us!
Yeah, the Jag truss worries me a little. I’ve got it playable. Such a small neck...
The J pup on mine seems a little weak.

What's that little black rectangular shaped thing between the pickup and the neck with the two screws in it? I've seen those in other photos of basses but don't know what it is and my bass doesn't have one so is it something you added yourself? Maybe something to do with the thumb?

It’s a thumb rest...often put in place if the pickup isn’t in the preferred spot for resting the thumb. Sometimes seen on the other side (closer to the G string) where it’s referred to as a “tug bar”.

A club I had a residency at in NYC for a while (National Undergound) had that amp in its backline. I loved it, and almost bought one. And I don't like Ampegs. Congrats. Its a great match for the bass :) .

Has anyone played one of these shorties, and the Ray4? Just wondering how they stack up in terms of build quality and fit & finish (obviously scale length & active vs passive make it hard to compare sound).

I've had the chance to play a few Ray4s, but not the short scale, so it'd be gold to have a frame of reference.
Joe Nerve compares to full size Stingrays in the last couple of pages if that helps.
