SBMM Stingray Short scale

I'm glad mine came with a gig bag, would have made the increased price in the UK compared to US harder to swallow without it.

Although, to be fair, as I spend time with it I'm starting to think the US pricing is a real bargain. That would put them in Fender Player price range which is very reasonable for these.

Anybody own a Mustang PJ, as well? Thinking of getting a second short scale, as I'm finding these Rays so comfortable, and just wondering how they compare.

I spent a few hours playing a Mustang PJ in a store and it seems to be really nice. Comfy neck, good P sounds. The neck is typical Fender gloss and a little thicker than the ‘Ray. I prefer the feel of the ‘Ray but the Mustang is great too. If they ever make a Ultra series Mustang I will be first in line.

Thanks, sounds good. Ideally would like to have the 'Ray sound & the P sound in two basses with the same scale length, would be much better for switching between. Might depend on if my summer bonus happens this year or not (thanks 'Rona!).

I did and just sold it because I also bought an American Mustang... and liked it slightly better.

The P/J is a great bass and a great compliment to the Stingray. Its less aggressive than, and a bit thumpier than the Stingray. To me the 2 basses together give the best of all worlds - Musicman, and Fender.

Thanks! Is it a Performer you have?

Yup, that's the idea, would give me all sounds I personally need. Unless I found a couple grand down the back of the sofa, then I'd happily complete the Leo trinity of tones with a Fallout

Yes. That's the one I kept. I had both, the P/J (that they gave a different name to now), and the Performer.

Only real reason I sold the P/J was because a friend was interested and willing to give me the price I paid for it (which was a great price). Construction wise, both basses seemed the same to me. Sound wise, the P/J had a hotter P pickup, and weaker J than the Performer. On the Performer the P is warmer and more musical (to my tastes), and its balanced with the J. I can switch back and forth without having to fiddle with the volume. I like too that you can blend the pickups.

Both are great basses. I haven't used my Fender though since I got my MMs :). I'm a MM guy much more than I'm a Fender guy.

Thanks, useful information! The MMs are great basses, I'm almost certainly going go replace the tuners for when gigging is eventually a thing again, but everything else feels solid. No skimping on these.

What do you not like about the tuners? Mine stays in tune very well.

They're perfectly fine tuners, mine do stay in tune (although I tend to have to tune up whenever I play). Same sort of quality as MIM Fenders - I can use them no problem, but like most sub-£1000 basses, I'd much prefer a set of Hipshots on them. They're just smoother, tend to hold tuning for longer, feel nicer when you're tuning, and the weight saved at the headstock is a nice bonus.

They're not necessary to swap by any means, but they're good tuners imo, not great ones. Whether it's worth the money go upgrade them is a very individual thing.

Agreed. The Hipshots are desirable if you feel like spending some money but by no means essential if you don't.

I asked SBMM about the gig bags that were included with some folks’ basses. This is the reply I got:
“A limited amount of Short Scale Stingray basses were shipped with gig bags as part of an unadvertised promotion."

Translation: Someone in the accounting department saw that the bass included a gig bag, went postal, and nearly had an aneurysm. So we decided to pull the bag. We didn't want to be responsible for the poor fella dying and all, ya know. Unfortunately, quite a number of basses had already shipped with the bag, so we had to go to the marketing department and ask them to come up with an excuse. Brilliantly, they replied with, "A limited amount of Short Scale Stingray basses were shipped with gig bags as part of an... unadvertised promotion. (wink wink)" So we rolled with that.

And now you know... the rest of the story. :D
