SBMM Stingray Short scale

Omg! My white Stingray came today (a day earlier than expected) and straight out of the bag (yes, it came with one) it has vastly surpassed my expectations! I am absolutely in love with this little beast. I’m not really much into slap bass usually but this thing sounds amazing in that style and with regular finger style too. The attack is punchier than any other bass I’ve ever played. It’s unreal. This was the best decision I’ve made in awhile. I feel bad to sell off my MIM PJ ‘Stang but I feel like I’ve started a new chapter in my playing now.

Congrats. I got rid of my MIM PJ when I got this, if that helps any :) . They are very different basses though, so ya might want to hold off for a while if you have no other Fenders.

Thank you! I can't put the Stingray down. I think I got a lightweight one too. My MIM PJ is definitely a bit heavier which surprises me. With some tweaks, the PJ can grab some similar tones (I upgraded its pickups to DiMarzios) but this Stingray has way more bite so it inspires me to get more funky as soon as I pick it up. I haven't sold the PJ yet because I have to wait for a buyer. I imagine I may be stuck with it for awhile since the economy over here is not fairing too well at the moment. Maybe I'll end up changing my mind and hold onto it for some more variety since it's my first and only Fender. :)

bite is just one of the things i've always loved about stingrays. what a wonderful sound! glad you're enjoying yours :)

btw, i ordered mine yesterday in daphne blue!

i'm considering selling my mustang - it was never physically comfortable for me, and my bronco is comfortable plus i have the rest of my herd of short, medium and long scales. i'm seriously running out of space :D

That's been my issue also.

In the past year I've gotten rid of 4 basses. Some were at one time my #1s, but my lower back made them impossible to play for 3 sets a night. I mean, I could play them... but every time I did, I regretted it.

What I immediately loved about the new Stingray (though I haven't used the SBMM live yet) was that it gave me back what I missed about MMs for a long time. You can hear every nuance of your playing with these. If I bend a string, you can hear it. Its much more dynamic, you hear articulations like ya just don't with a Fender.

I love my new Stingrays.

I think you're going to be very happy.

I think you're going to love it! I love mine way more than I expected. I was a little nervous to go pick it up because I had already put down a big deposit, but as soon as I pulled it out of the bag at the shop, I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It's beautiful. Every detail of it. And it has a nice feel. To be honest though, the stock strings are very zingy. I'm rolling with it for now because there are so many other factors that I appreciate, but I'm definitely going to switch to a warmer set soon.

I had originally planned to get the blue one since I prefer the maple fretboard on my Squier Mustang, but I changed my mind at the last minute to have more contrast between the two. If I could buy another one, I would definitely get the blue one also. Your collection is much bigger than mine. I have 3 basses and a guitar here (well, 2 more basses back in the US, and some guitars, if that counts) I already feel like I have too many since I can only play one at a time and usually favor only one. This new one is going to take some attention away from my Squier but they definitely have different things to offer that are very useable. The Bronco is probably very similar to my Squier Mustang so I see why you like it.

I totally get the weight issue now too. My PJ is much less attractive for me to pick up because of the extra heft. I like when I can just whip an instrument out of the case quickly without any effort, and it feels safer to move it around because it doesn't have gravity working against me with every movement. I hope you get a light one, but I think even the way this hangs on me feels better. It doesn't have any neck dive like the Mustangs and it is much more ergonomic (for me anyway).

Can't wait to hear that you've received yours so I can relive the excitement ;)

Anybody know a shop with these in stock? Looks like most shops are on backorder.

the first batch sold out really quickly, and i couldn't find any of my usual stores that had one in stock. here's a highly rated store on reverb that has the blue one in stock
Sterling StingRay Short Scale in Daphne Blue | The Guitar Department | Reverb

the only way i won't love it is if it hurts my shoulder to play. i love the stingray sound, always have, and it's a beautiful bass that seems to do well in the quality department. i chose the maple fretboard as i want any extra brightness the fingerboard may bring to the party.

i believe i currently have 11 basses, but 2 are mod platforms and 2 or 3 i plan to sell. the mods have both had changes in plans.

no neck dive, you say? that would be very nice.

the strings are unsurprisingly slinkies, and since i wanted to give them another shot, not having liked them the first time, i'll be happy to try them when my new bass arrives.

i'd say i can't wait, but i'll have to. when there was a march ETA for orders placed in february, it got pushed back to april. if i have to wait till august, i can live with that. if it shows up earlier, woohoo!

I was surprised that this bass was available at some stores over here in Thailand. The city I live in didn't have any but I found a shop with a connection so they got it sent over within 3 days. I think it helps that Indonesia isn't too far (comparatively) and the demand for short scale basses over here isn't nearly as big as far as I can tell. Not sure why since Asians are generally smaller on average.. Anyway, it'll be worth the wait. Also, I feel like my playing position is more comfortable now in some ways. Maybe it will be the same for you, pcake :)

maybe it was there because you were meant to have it :)

i'm always searching for comfortable basses due to damaged shoulders. most of my other basses are short scale, too, including a 28.6" scale mikro and a 24.75" scale smallguitars.com MB2. also a medium scale ibanez mezzo.

but none of them sound like a stingray!

Starting to ramp up my desire for one of these SBMM short scales. But I want blue with dark fingerboard. If I can get two for a good price, I'll swap necks and have a blue with dark and a white with maple.

Searching...

It’s funny you want the dark fretboard with the blue because I wanted the opposite (white with maple) haha, we could have made a deal if we were neighbors or something. :p

Just ordered mine.

What are the preferred strings (length & guage)? I currently have chrome's on my P bass.

Are there light weight tuners that are an exact fit?
I have tried the stock strings, labella flats, and recently GHS brite flats. the brite flats are my fave by far. .108 e string really takes the floppiness out. as for light weight tuners, i put ultalite usas on, took one hole of drilling each.

I like GHS Balanced Nickel Short Scale on mine, I like med gauge on a shorty.

I put in Hipshot Ultralite LIC Tuner HB6C 1/2 Chrome, with one wrap of electrical tape on each tuner it's a good fit. Getting the 3+1 configuration was easiest by ordering them from SportHiTech | Your source for Guitar Parts and Bass Parts and more . The bass was a little neck-heavy before this upgrade, but many others don't seem to have that problem, and it's perfect now.

Truly a fantastic bass, I hope you enjoy yours!

I still haven’t changed the stock strings. I don’t love them because they have kind of an ugly zingy buzz when I’m not plugged in, but they add a crispness that I’m starting to like a bit. Wondering if I should let them wear in or switch to something else. I have Labellas on my Mustang and they’re great but I feel like they might dull the Stingray bite too much. Are the GHS flats still crispy on top? Normally I don’t like that, but this bass has changed my mind. Also, the .108 gauge makes me wonder about the size of the nut slot. It fits without any modification? Thanks for any info you may be able to share. :)

the brite flats are half-rounds, which does seem to be about right. halfway between the mega zingy slinkies, and the deep dark labellas. i stitched the nut to a black graphtec and it doesnt seem to be having any problems since i originally installed it when i had the default slinkies
