SBMM Stingray Short scale

Just talked with a local luthier and I’m going to drop the Daphne off this week for a defret and Hipshot ultralight installation. Going to a bone nut as well.

I told her that I was leaning toward maple or other light colored veneers for the fret lines, but she’s trying to talk me into rosewood or ebony. Any opinions?

I like the idea of ebony to compliment the black dot markers! Excited to hear about the customizations!!

I’m gonna be sending my bridge and string tree and neck plate off to be replated in Black Chrome just been waiting to make sure I’m done dealing with Guitar Center first lol. I also have black hipshot tuners and a carbon fiber control plate I’m excited to get on it.

Well, since you asked, I think a contrasting veneer for the fret lines would look best. Can't say I've seen a maple neck with ebony fret lines, but it sounds pretty cool to me.

Just dropped mine off at a luthier to get a deeper inspection and setup of the bass if it ends up being a keeper. If they recommend a return I’m gonna grab the Daphne Blue and have them go in on it. They’re also an artist for Music Man with access to some fun parts so I’ve decided I’m gonna end up with one in each neck type and mod them so they’re completely different beasts.

One of them I’m thinking about taking pretty far and doing things like adding a second pickup near the neck HH style (custom pickups I’m sure). Maybe even get crazy with the electronics and switches. I mainly use my instruments for recording and work in all genres except country. So versatility is definitely a goal with one of them.

Does any of the pickguard makers have the template for the Sterling short scale yet? I checked pickguard planet and WD but neither seem to have it listed on their site. Thinking about picking up a White SS Sterling for a project Bass

Not that I can find. Looking like a template will need to be made. I have a carbon fiber control plate I’m excited to put on but can’t decide what kinda pickguard material to choose lol.

Hold on pardner, you just got a new bass! I am waiting to see what you'll mod on that bad axe!
:woot:

Hahaha! My Sandberg Lionel is staying stock...Love that Bass! I'm going to shoot a youtube video tomorrow for it.
Which is why I need a project Bass like this Sterling Shorty Stingray :woot: Nordstrand MM pickup, Hipshot ultralites, Bone or Brass nut and Pickguard...With only 2 colors to choose from I gotta make it personal...I really wish the White one had a maple neck though....Maybe after I get it someone will want to trade necks...Rosewood for Maple

My white one might end up going back to Guitar Center for a Daphne Blue and I really wanted the Rosewood fret board so if that ends up happening I could be down to trade necks!

Yeah, you say it will stay stock now... :roflmao:
I understand how it goes. Start out with a really amazing bass, and you find yourself wondering, "how could this ever be improved on?" I did the same with my Rob Allen Mouse. But I found a couple ways...

I posted vids of the SBMM in action. Might as well post the Musicman for anyone interested. I recorded direct, pretty sure nothing but a little EQ was added in the mix. If even that.

Really enjoyed watching this again. I just noticed that you’re playing lefty. Went back to Roberta and made sure you were playing right. Did you record this in a mirror, or are you ambidextrous, or am I losing it?

Sorry for the noob question. My Olympic white SS stingray is coming in next week...It will be the first bass I have ever owned...Just wondering is it necessary to get it set up professionally or it is good out of boxes? Thank you!

Mine was set up pretty well out of the box. But if you use a tuner, check to see if the open strings and the 12th fret (octave) are the exact same tuning. If not, you will need to make some small adjustments to the bridge. It’s probably best to get someone else to do it if it’s new for you. Also, you’ll probably notice that this bass pushes out a really hot/loud signal, so you may want to lower the pickup away from the strings. It will tame any of the warble/mud that may happen when the magnets interfere with the string movement and it will reduce the volume so it’s not overwhelming with the volume knob maxed out.

Before all that, just enjoy playing it though! I’ve been playing for half my life and this is my favorite so far. I wish it was the one I had started with, although the others have made me appreciate it even more. Good choice on the color by the way ;)

Mine felt and sounded good out of the box so I’m not taking mine in. However, I have no idea if the neck relief is good or not on my Bass. Whenever I look down the neck it always seems straight to me. So I figure if it plays well then no need to take it in. I’m still a young bassist so if that’s not correct thinking please let me know.

Congrats! There are lots of good "setup" videos on youtube, so try those before forking over cash for what may be a minor tweak here and there.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer! Just wondering how would I know if the pickup is lowered to the right level? I have watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to setup the bridge properly and I think I would be able to get that part right but haven't found anything talking about the pickup adjustment yet.

Thanks again! :)

Well.......I might have my friend Mike over at West Virginia Wood Arts make me a Cocobolo pickguard for it and I am for sure going to have him make me a custom wood pickguard for the Shorty Stingray also
