SBMM Stingray Short scale

Will SBMM be coming out with new colors any time soon?

I imagine they would reveal something like that at a NAMM. Maybe announcement January? Release spring/summer?
I know after talking to customer service about a replacement neck that they’re way more popular than they ever anticipated so I can see them putting more love into them going forward but we shall see.

I really would love to see a stealth version in SBMM or EBMM.

My new Black/parchment/Black SBMM pick guard for my Olympic white model gets here Saturday. Gonna throw it and my carbon fiber control panel when it gets in. Once I wear through the strings it cane with I’m gonna put the black hipshot tuners I have for it on. Should come out sweet.

I was also gonna replace the nut, strip the wiring, replace the pots with US pots and send the bridge off to be replated in black chrome made but now that I spontaneously bought the EBMM I’ll probably hold off on that until after I move next month.

Also trying to decide what I should do pick up wise with the SBMM to make sure it has its own character versus the EBMM tone wise. Keep it passive? Make it active? Hmmm decisions decisions. Open to suggestions to frankstein the SBMM!

Read through this entire thread from beginning to end. Couldn't resist while it's still available in that gorgeous Daphnie Blue with maple neck so ordered one today, it's supposed to be here tomorrow. I had one of the very early Sterling Ray 34's in white with rosewood years ago and didn't think it sounded much at all like my old MM Stingray and hated the 3 band eq so eventually sold it. Listening to this new one on u-tube I'm getting more of a sense of a Stingray sound and hard to believe coming from a passive bass at that. It will be nice not having to worry about 9 volt batteries. Any suggestions on round wound strings that will fit this bass properly in case I just hate the Slinkys?

Roundwound strings? Well, I personally have really liked the strings I've got from Stringjoy. They do short and medium scale, and will assemble a custom set for you.

Good quality strings, nice clean sound with no harshness, and great customer support. Stringjoy Guitar Strings | Custom Guitar & Bass Strings

Lots of companies make short scale strings now! I have a pair of heavy short scale strings on the way from String Joy I’m excited to try out. One of my short scales is getting pitched down to D standard just haven’t decided which yet.

These have finally started showing up in Canada!

I picked mine up this afternoon from Long & McQuade. I haven't had much time to play it, but I immediately noticed something odd, so I wanted to see if any of you have also experienced it:

The volume knob's 100-0% range seems to exists between 100 and 75%, with a linear decrease in volume over that span. 100% is as loud as I'd expect it to be, 75-1% is basically the same barely audible volume, and 0% is truly off. The same behaviour is exhibited with the volume boost on and off.

Does anyone know if this is normal, or is it back to the store with this one?

I have but one gripe about my SBMM shorty. It's a very minor gripe. I've had to lower the pickup considerably to keep my pick from hitting it. I play with the edge of my palm anchored to the bridge for more accuracy. With my other P/J basses, I pick just past the bridge pickup so they haven't been a problem.

Oh, and I wish the neck was a little beefier, so two minor problems. Other than that, nodda.

honestly on the newest one they sent me I haven’t played it except and 100 percent volume so I wouldn’t know but I’ll check tonight when I’m home from work!

So this second SBMM SS I got feels way heavier than the first one. The first one must have been on the light side. This one also has more neck dive than the last one. The finish is great, better than the last one even. The fit is a little less precise than I remember on the last one. Taking it to a luthier Monday to make sure the neck is straight and that there isn’t something I missed to make sure it’s a keeper. Mine is on the Fedex truck now out for delivery. Just hoping the fit and finish etc is all up to standard. I know how to do a proper set up. My last bass a Squier CV Precision was all pretty good other than a missing screw on the pick guard and a bad tuning key but I ended up gutting the thing with new wiring harness, Hipshot tuning keys, Fralin pickups and a Omega bridge spending another $400 to get it the way I wanted it. I really don't want to mess with this new one that way if I just don't have to.

I have nothing to contribute. I just wanted to say how much I love my SS Stingray. This bass is so comfortable and easy to play and sounds so good.
I totally agree. I’ve had and sold a Squier SS Jag, Fender Mustang PJ, SX Ursa 1 JR, and now the SBMM Stingray shorty. I did like the SX but had to sell it. IMO the SBMM has good build, versatility and feel in my hands. I do however want another Ursa 1 JR so I can have a 30” P style bass.

Just got the Daphnie Blue version a few minutes ago and fit and finish look amazing. Set up is near perfect, no trus rod adjustment needed and believe it or not it was nearly in tune. String height came just the way I like it, rather low and I'm getting no fret buzz or rattle. I still have to check itonation but off hand it seems fine. The only odd thing was the humbucking pickup was pushed down nearly flat on the bass side and up about 3 quarters inch on the treble side. A simple screwdriver fixed that quickly, which brings up a question. What is the ideal distance from the pickup pole piece to the bottom of the string on this particular bass and should the treble side be a bit closer? This bass sounds amazing! It definitely has that Stingray punchy harmonic on the top end when I hit the string with more force. I never got that Stingray top end with my Ray 34 and that bass even had active electronics. How they are able to achieve this on this short scale with it being passive is amazing, it really cuts through! My volume knob increases and decreases in volume evenly, not like someone else described theirs as behaving. Tuning keys work great and nothing is binding up like on my Squier CV P bass before I replaced them. Also this bass is really light! I haven't weighed it but it feels nearly half the weight of my modified Squier. I never played a short scale before, it's so effortless to play compared to my Precision. So now I have three different basses (Ibanez TMB100, Squier CV Precision and this Sterling Stingray) and each sounds awesome and has its own distinctive sound character and none of them were all that expensive. I'll try to post some photos this weekend.

I think you are correct, I was just checking the Ernie Ball site and saw them. The ones on here do appear to be the 45-105 gauge, not super expensive either. Hopefully they hold thier tone for a while and don't go dull in 2 weeks or less like some strings tend to. Thanks
