SBMM Stingray Short scale

I'm playing the steel roundwounds that came on the bass. So far, I like them quite a bit.

Of course, I just got a new Acinonyx, so that is getting more playing time these days.
:D
I believe it comes with Slinky’s which are nickel aren’t they?

I use DR High Beams (stainless round) mostly because I wanted something a bit tighter than the EB slinkies and there just aren’t a lot of short scale options. Though they are definitely not as comfortable.

I bought it used, don't know how it was strung up. But I like the bright sound of steels. Which ones do you recommend ?
I'm planning to get a set of Stringjoy short scales next. I've liked the strings I've purchased from them so far.

When you say "steels" what exactly do you mean? Nearly all strings are steel in the middle, and "nickel" strings are really just a coating over the steels. Sorry, I get particular on the terminology.

I meant 100% steels completly, like Rotosound RS66 or D'Addario EPS.

You mean stainless steel rounds then. I tried Roto66 on my Mikro and I couldn’t even get them in tune. The E string snapped. A lot of people complain that they tend to have a dead E string and I think I kept tightening it to try to get it in tune until it snapped. So I can’t recommend them. Haven’t tried Daddarios.

I have a set of Stringjoy short scales on my EBMM Stingray and like them a lot on that bass. When I bought it I think it had a set of DR Hi Beams on it. They were a little too clangy and harsh on the fingers for me.

Yes, stainless steel rounds, thanks for the hint.

Well, I am actually using RS66 (95-40) but as long scale. Stringing them on a short scale is a bit messy, mainly the E string, but it works. That's the reason I would like to purchase short scale strings next time. I already found the RS66 as short scale but also would like to try other brands. D'Addario seems to have deleted their EPS170S recently from their string portfolio. I just ordered a set of Pyramid S824 (short scale steel rounds) but their might still be other brands offering short scale steel rounds.

Amazon has Daddario EPS170S strings in stock.

May be in the US, but not in Germany. I tried to order them from Germany also from other traders. All told me, that Daddario deleted the EPS170S from their portfolio.

P.S. just checked D'Addarios Website. The EPS170S are deleted their as well.
That is a bummer. I would recommend the DR High Beams. They feel and play well and aren’t too bright. If you’re looking for stainless steel rounds you’re not concerned about comfort so give them a go if you can.

Well, I am. But the RS66 are not as bad as I thought. I know and played them since the 70ties and played them until '95 or '96. At that time they were really bad to your fingers or frets and I switched to other brands. I bought the actual set in 2014 or 2015 and had it laying around since then. I strung it in November on my SBMM SS because I didn't had any other short scale set available ... and was positively surprised by the sound and handling. The sound really supports the passive Stingray sound and the strings are much easier to the fingers and frets then I experienced 25 years ago with Rotos. May be they changed something in there production process, I don't know.

However, I am looking for alternatives. I just ordered a set from Pyramid, a german string maker - are they known in the US ? But I am also looking for other stainless steel short scale strings in the market like Fender, DR, GHS, Cocco, LaBella ect.

I’m happy with a set of TI Jazz Rounds on my SBMM. They’re 32” but fit without issues. Sound great and really easy on the fingers. I’d recommend the Thomastik’s to anyone, especially if a lighter gauge set of strings isn’t too off putting.
I have them on two medium scales (since they're really 32s) and agree with this recommendation.
