SBO 24 - Woodrow

Routing and shaping is an area where Youtube videos can be misleading. Most of the time, the video is sped up so you don't realize how long it really takes. Even if it were shown at proper speed, you don't understand how much mental effort it can take to keep everything flat against the template and working cleanly.

But you're at my favorite part, hand shaping with a shinto rasp is oh so satisfying. Looking good so far.
This pretty much perfectly matches my experience. The Shinto is so Zen. It's like talk therapy without the talking.

Here is the neck pocket and pick up pockets drawn out. The line at the bottom perpendicular to Center is the 32-in line. So it's not exactly the end of the bridge. They're only pertinent at this point so that I can use those spaces for the attachment screws, but hopefully they're at least close. I would welcome any thoughts or input on the pickup placement if somebody sees any issue with it. I'm thinking I might move the neck pickup maybe 3/8 of an inch closer to the neck pocket.

Did the back curve but ran out of daylight before I could clean it up. This was much more difficult than the front, I guess because it was an inside curve rather than a hump like on the front (I can never remember which is convex and which is concave, hopefully you get it). Right at the end I snapped my 3" router bit in half, lol.
I'm hoping I didn't take too much wood. I had to remove a lot of middle to get any trim at all on the wings.

That curve would definitely be tough on a bit. Little light passes…. Tedious, but 1/16” to 1/8” at a time.

I wonder if something “along these lines” would be useful in shaping and sanding. Maybe not this specific attachment, but something like it…. Could probably make one fairly easily ?

You should mark out the neck pocket so you can mark the scale length. Then you know where the saddles of the bridge will be and can better place the pickups. By eye, I think your neck pickup location is good, bridge might want to move closer to the neck a bit, maybe 1/2".

This is looking really good, nice job. I’m late to the party on the comments about the routing sled, but yeah, there’s lots of trial and error to get what you need out of those. When I built the one that I created to radius the full back of my headless builds back in 22 I had to re-cut the radius a couple times to get it right and the sled itself I had to move the wheels to get the depth that I needed, so I ran into a very similar issue as your’s above.

But it looks like it’s all coming together for you nicely so, great learning experience and nice final output. 👍🏼

Yes, it's marked on there. That's how I was able to mark the 32" line.

Yeah, I think it took me like eight passes. I got more than a little impatient as the sun started setting.

I’ve found that, “Man I gotta get this done!” actually means, “This is a good time to stop before I pooch things up.” YMMV and all that. I do understand though. Thicknessing a body blank with an 1 1/2” bit on the pin router seems to take forever so radiusing that body with 1/4” 1/2” (?) bit…

And I forgot to attach the picture...View attachment 6986072

You’re getting there. Just remember, this isn’t really a race. What you are trying to do is build a really cool instrument…. If you don’t make the deadline for summer build off, so be it. Don’t compromise what you wanna do just to get it done quickly. Just build the instrument that’s in your head…
