There are so many moving parts to the sale it's hard to say what really happened but we know from your end how it ended up.
The final outcome is you have a bass that isn't what it's supposed to be according to the seller. My opinion, move on. I don't understand how your grandpa wanted such an exact bass but he did. Now that it's over, ask the music store if you can turn it in or sell it on consignment. Might find that it's hard to like something when it has bad memories attached to it.
Consider selling and buying your grandpa an authentic Fender Jazz from a reputable seller, i.e. an established music store. If you can go to one inspect it, evaluate the store, then have it set up and have pictures taken once you take ownership. I think your grandpa will like the bass whatever it is. I can't get a cup of coffee out of our kids! ha ha...
