Schecter Owners Club, part 3

So now I’m thinking about getting a P in since I really do like the J in the neck position just putting the P in the bridge position. Anyone know any good reason why that wouldn’t work? I can’t seem to find any bases with the PJ configuration done that way.

If it sounds good then sure. Have you switched the pickups to see if the other sounds good at the bridge?

I haven’t done anything yet. I’m still shopping for the replacement to my EMG DC (which I don’t like) I like the J the way it is in the neck and I’m thinking of replacing the DC with a P. But since I’ll essentially have a PJ I’m wondering if people think I need to have the traditional PJ set up with the P in the neck and the J on the bridge.

First off they are soapbars, so despite the internal configuration, they are all just meant to sound like or replicate something. Aside from that, there are so many different varieties of P pickups out there, that whether or not one would sound good in the bridge is entirely subjective. Also, the DC may sound good in the bridge. I'd switch them out and listen to it. There are tons of double p pickup basses out there. I am in fact building a double reverse p pickup bass now. Frankly I hate4 the way jazz pickups sound in the bridge, most of the time. They're too burpy and squished sounding to me. But as I was saying it is all about personal preference. Really depending on the system you have, you may be able to direct replace with just about any EMG. I hear you on the DC though. I never liked that pickup. In fact I like the lower priced 35HZ better.

Thanks for the input man. Right now the DC is in the bridge and the J is in the neck. That’s the way it comes from schecter. I’m using just the J soloed which I really like but since I hate DC I’m annoyed by the fact that I don’t have any variation available. so I’m thinking of just replacing the DC in the bridge with the EMGP.

So what do you not like about the DC, so we can help recommend a different pickup? I would probably suggest that if you like the J in the neck pickup then the J will probably sound good to you in the bridge, and will sound different by virtue of it's position in relation to the bridge. The P pickup is bound to sound a bit more full range and kind of wooly. More bottom end, more low end growl.

Well, I’m pretty new at all this so I’m not sure if I have the language to describe exactly what I don’t like. But, the DC soloed seems very very bright/sharp just generally too much Of some thing

Well a soloed bridge pickup is almost always going to be more twangy. The neck pickup will be more full range and throaty. It may have less to do with the pickup and more the position. I only add in a very little amount of the bridge pickup on blend with my Stiletto. I'm mostly going for something really big and clangy, like a Pbass.

If it was me, I'd swap what you have to see/hear what a J sounds like in the bridge position and what the DC sounds like in the neck position. I'm betting the J sounds thinner/tighter at the bridge than the DC.
An EMG Active J and the P sounds very similar in my experience. Not exactly but very similar.
My experience comes from installing EMG's in a lot of my Basses and Guitars and other peoples Basses and Guitars for over 30 years.
I play mostly Blues, Classic Rock, Hard Rock and some Metal. I like one really good Tone with varying degrees of Dirt/Distortion emulating Tube amps using SansAmp Products.
I have never cared much for Traditional Humbuckers/side by side Dual Coils(DC) in either position on Basses.
Actually I'm not fond of any Bridge pickup soloed or blended with any neck pickup on Basses. I don't Pop or slap and adding/blending the Bridge w/ the neck sounds strange to me and believe it's because of the phasing going on between the bridge and Neck pickups. Pop/Slappers love the Bridge for that tight pop and it's usually a Blend of the 2 positions.
I suggested the TW because it give you the versatility of a Dual Coil (DC) and a Stacked Single coil. In stacked mode it's supposedly the same as a JCS using Ceramic and Steal Magnets (which has tamed Highs compared to the J that has Ceramic magnets).
I'd try a 35P4 or better yet a 35P4A(With Alnico Magnets.
You might like the P in the Neck better than the J but you're not going to hear a really big difference.
Remember; My ears are not your ears and you my like Tones that I don't. All you can do is experiment till you find the tones that You Love for the styles/genre of music you play.
All my P/J Schecters have the Bridge Pickup disconnected. Some think that is ridiculous.
Less is more works for me a lot more than a lot of alternatives in mixing tones, songwriting and many aspects of my life. YEMV.;)

I love all the insight and advice thank you again! I agree with you that I’m not going to like the J as much in the bridge. Since I’m not at all happy with the DC I currently am just playing the J soloed in the neck. which I like fine but I feel like I should get something I’ll like better in the bridge. I definitely think a P is in order but what do you think about a P in the bridge position on a Schechter?

You can get a pretty good idea what a Soloed P will sound like if you put your J in the bridge. Like I said in my previous post, "the EMG Active J and the P sounds very similar in my experience. Not exactly but very similar." IMO, it will sound similar to putting a P there. Of course you won't know how a P & J will sound blended until you get a P and actually try blending them.
If you hate the DC in the bridge and it's useless to you, you need to try something different.
Looks like EMG discontinued the 35P4A(w/Alnico magnets).
I'd look on Reverb and Ebay for a used 35P4 or a 35P4A. I see a used 35P4(just the Pickup w/o pots) on Ebay now for $50 + 8 shipping w/ Make offer.

I have 2 EMG 35P4's in my Epi Korina Explorer, but it doesn't have a Bridge pickup. It has a middle and a neck.
I really like them especially compared to the stock Passive Humbuckers.

All right thank you again! I am officially getting 835P and I will first try it in the bridge and if I don’t love it I’ll try switching them just so I

Hey Ed, do you like two P better than a PJ?
