When I had my last Elite-5 I upgraded the preamp to a Aguilar OPB-2 I also switched the HZ's for EMG-P40's. For an Elite-4 the p/u would be P or J 35's. There was no need for modifications to the bass itself everything dropped in perfectly. Here's a pic of the OPB-2 in the cavity.

The net result was a like having a P-Bass on steroids.

I'd bet those upgrades made a big difference . I Love the sound of a Split coil P . I've been using the original Active EMG P's and J pickups for over 25 years in everything but never liked any pickup in the bridge position, by itself or blended with a neck (sweet-spot) pickup. I have 4 Schecters that don't even have the bridge pickup wired up, the pickup just fills the hole. Putting a P in a soapbar package was a great idea from EMG. I've never tried one in the bridge position. Do you use a bridge pickup much ?

Eddie, I sold this bass and bought a new Hellraiser Extreme-5 which I installed an Aguilar OBP-3 into and I decided to leave the EMG TW P/U's in the bass because they sound great and have coil taps. I can tell you that my Elite-5 pictured above was a great sounding bass and I tended to leave the balance between the two P/U's in the middle to get a good blend.

There is only 2 P's in a 3.5 inch Soap bar housing offered. The 35P4 & the 35P4X , both with Ceramic Magnets. I have a Geezer in my Butterscotch Model T and It's a great sounding pickup, I was surprised it uses Alnico 5 Magnets. It has a low-mid bump somewhere around 1,000 Hz that give it that Grind/Grit/punch that a lot of us rockers love. I can get an almost Identical sound with the 35P4 by bumping up the graphic EQ at 1,000 Hz. The Geezer P is my second favorite Passive P pickup. My Fav is the Schecter Monster Tone (with Ceramic Bar Magnets and Nickle Carbon pole pieces) that they have reissued when they made the Michael Anthony Signature Bass.
EMG says the 35P4X has more articulation, more like a passive pickup and I quote,
"with a truly vintage tone an feel.. With the EMG X preamp on-board, you get even greater dynamic control and touch sensitivity, much like a passive pickup." I've never tried one but it surely sounds like a good one on paper.
I love what I get with 35P4.
