Choosing 'your' strings is kinda like finding 'your' cab or amp or...etc. You need to try different strings and see what you like or don't like, which can get kinda pricy unless you get lucky early on. I went thru half a dozen different sets/brands/gauges on each of mine before finding what works for me.
A few suggestions that might help lessen the load...
- if you stay with the same gauges that the bass is set up for now (probably 45-105), you won't have to worry as much about screwing up the setup in general, which can affect the tone somewhat.
- there's usually someone in the 'accessories' class-ads here that is dealing off slightly used stringsets and that can be a way of experimenting with different ones for a little less than straight-up retail pricing...worked well for me, anyway.
- while it's basically impossible to know exactly what a stringset will sound like on your particular rig, listening to other folks' sound clips can give you a general idea of what different strings sound like...but...
- ...everyone's tone will be different due to amp/cab differences, individual playing styles, room acoustics, even individual differences in the same brand & model of bass.
Bottom line is that no one can really tell you what 'your' strings are...you'll have to go looking for them. The hunt can be fun tho...
