Schecter Owner's Club, pt 2

Stiletto Custom-4. First bass (and first post).

Despite being a lifelong wind and keyboard player, I've somehow gotten it into my head in my old age that I want to learn bass. I picked this one because I liked how it looked (and I got a pretty good deal on it). So far, so good.

After lurking here for a couple of months, I'm really impressed with what a great community this is. (So I guess I might as well get a number.)

Also,cool thing...the bassist/guitarist in a band my dad is the North American sound guy for (Grand Dérangement) are both Schecter endorsed. The bassist has an F Bass he plays a lot,but he uses the Schecters when the job calls for it.

You know, the white Model T just didnt speak to me like the black one does. Never played it. Their names were Goode and Eville! LOL Eville now goes by the name Rob - for its namesake. Thanks for the number.

I actually strung both Model Ts with the Steve Harris Rotosound flats. Didnt care for them much. Pain in the rear because I had to turn the truss rods when I put the 110s on and then again when I went back to 100s.

What exactly about those strings didn't you like? I've been curious about getting some other flats and these seemed interesting at the very least.

Im just not a fan of the flatwound feel. Although I love Steve's sound! I couldnt get my usual bright, clunky sound. I can emulate Steve's sound fairly accurately using just roundwounds and attacking the strings in a certain way - hard to explain just how. And the Harris strings are pretty heavy gauge. I tried them and didnt care for them but I would say that it had nothing to do with that brand of strings.

What was the outcome here, Mudd? I was hoping that the OBP-3 would make the pickup blend more gradual, but now that I see it doesn't include a blend pot, I doubt that the wiring alone would fix it.

I finally installed the OBP-3 (a mission). Nothing changes with the pickup blend.

The OBP eq is much more useable but the basic tone still retains some of the lifeless woody timbre that it had before so maybe the pickups need to get swapped out too. Maybe the strings need changing but I'd say its the pups. The neck one is particularly soulless when running a clean signal. It sounds fantastic with the VT Bass running hot, but that's just the pedal - all my basses similar through it.

The eq is brutally powerful with the 18v Stiletto. The bass is particularly sensitive and boosting it is just silly through my rig.
With the VT however, the compression results in tone changes rather than boosting the volume much and it sounds awesome. You can be in for a surprise if you disengage the VT though!

For someone tossing up between changing the pups or eq, I'd go for pups.

Thanks for the opinion on those. The reasons that you stated are pretty much why I did want to get a set. :D
