Schecter Stargazer: New version?

You know how it usually goes with lefty stuff... blink and miss it, never to be seen again...I just stumbled on it at the time and bought it immediately. I feel very fortunate to have it. Over the years online at some point I recall seeing a Crimson Ghost 5, and a Tobacco burst 4- but both had vanished before I could get to them.

A few of the design elements seem strange to me, like they designed this as a 12-string exclusive and then later decided to do 4/5 string versions as well, but made weird changes and didn't really know what pickups they'd be using. Could be an earlier picture, but the body on the 12 is shorter, better matching the curve of the pickguard, and the bridge pickup is placed like 1/2" closer to the "sweet spot." The 12 string has 24 frets vs 22 on the 4/5. The neck pickup/pickguard edge is bizarre, like why not mount the neck PU in the pickguard to hide the square edges of the route? It's a lot less noticeable on the white one. If it were me I'd swap it with a Rickenbacker 4000 pickguard and hide the neck PU under it,

I just received my stargazer 5 and after a few hours of playing I’m really impressed. I can’t put my finger on the tone , it really is a cross of a jazz/ stingray with a Rick like flavor. I really love the power im getting off a passive bass. The neck is perfect and it’s very comfortable to play. My only small beef is the glossy back of the neck , I’d prefer a satin neck. The range of tones is very impressive, it would be difficult to find something this unique and versatile at this price point.

Looks great! How do you like the toggles for each pickup? Are there big volume differences between the settings? How would you describe the two settings for the neck pickup? And how loud is the neck pickup compared to the bridge pickup?

So many questions :bassist:

Thank you for your time!

That’s the incredible thing the volume is vey consistent in most positions. I’d say the bridge is a bit hotter and sounds similar to a stingray and the neck pickup is a smidge quieter and has a Jazzy sound. I love the coil tap on the neck PU and I find I prefer the bridge pu unaltered.

Great news, thank you. How would you describe the two neck pickup sounds? And how do you like the feel of those pickups without shells? Thx!

That looks amazing! Does this 5 string also have narrow string spacing like the other schecter 5 strings?

A local retailer got a 5 string in today. The white version with ebony fingerboard. I spent time with it and honestly, I didn't come away all that impressed. Tonally, there were really only a couple pickup and coil tap settings that did much for me. But the build quality is what got me. The neck joint was not smooth at all. Could easily feel the joints where the neck was glued into the body. Did not care for the feel of the gloss on the neck either. Sticky. This is personal preference but the string spacing felt really tight. Glad I got to play one as it totally eliminated the GAS that was building up on these.

Thanks for sharing the information. I haven't got a chance to try one but my GAS is still triggered just by their looking...
