Schroeder Sealed Mini 12+

Curt72 wrote:

Talked to Jorg, got his advice and ordered a 4 ohm mini 12 light, the ported and angled version, no tweeter.

This is what he said about the different options available:

-the ported angled Mini 12light has the most low end of all 3;
-the ported front fired has less low end, is a little tighter in the mids and high mids, and
-the sealed front fired model is mainly designed for electric and acoustic upright players; a sealed
model produces less feedback while playing acoustic upright....

I think Jorg's summary is excellent, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. I spend some time in Edinburgh, and I don't think there is anyone selling his cabs over there. Are you getting this directly from Jorg or from a European dealer?

I got it straight from Jorg as there is no dealer here in Ireland. I think the closest is in Italy, woodandtronics.com.

I hope its going to work out cheaper this way for me, but customs will still have their word to say in this, so fingers cross. but anyway, it was nice to deal with mr. schroeder himself.

If the cab is going to work out as a stand alone for my needs, that would be fantastic! 22lbs is a dream. also curious to see how it compares with my eden d112xlt, which I then might let go.

Joker,

The angled, ported mini12+ is a bit voiced with mid-range accentuated but you'll find the sealed, forward-facing mini12+ to be very smooth and wonderful sounding for acoustic. In fact, it sounds to me a lot like the Acme B-1 with two differences--because it is only two-way it is not quite as HiFi and well defined in the mid-range, and it is significantly more efficient and LOUDER. I've driven my Sealed Schro with the Clarus SL amp and had no problem getting the sound that I need--like behind a loud 18-piece big band in a big room. I could only get that volume from my B-1 when I ran it with a Focus or a Woods Ultra cranked--the original Clarus amps just didn't have the guts to drive it. If youhave a chance, check it out. I do love the sound of the Acme however as long as you have the amp power.

from what i've read here, the mini 12 is pretty voiced, and might be a little wonky for something like an acoustic, which i usually prefer a more neutral response.

no love for an Acme B1, will-man? my czech-ease and AI Focus sound pretty bad ass thru mine.

Jae, I've got three cabs on my plate right now....B1, Schro Mini 12+ sealed, and the Glock Super Deluxe. They're very different, but there seems to be alot of buzz about them all and I haven't tried any of them. The B1 might very well get the nod.

cool stuff, erik,

i too have to give the b1 some good juice to get it going, but its rare that i need that kind of volume. still, given the terrific voicing of the schroeder line, i can imagine the mini, yet mighty minty goodness.

Erik:

Thanks for confirming the volume handling of the Schroeder. I've been GASing for a Clarus with a sealed Schroeder for UB jazz and small room rock stuff. I have a ported 12 8ohm cab with a Eminence Pro in it that sounds beautiful with my Bassman 400 head. But its barely loud enough for rehearsal. Have to drag a 410 for gigs. I almost bit on an original Clarus on Ebay but was scared off by the wattage rating. I've heard that some of these "botique" speakers take some wattage to move.

So your thinking the new Clarus with sealed mini is a good volume producer??

Mark

Yes, the Schroeder Mini12 speakers--I have one of the original angled and ported Mini 12+ cabinets and a front-facing, sealed mini12+Light--are very efficient and can get really loud. I have switched over to an AI Focus amp as my main gigging amp, and it produces more than enough power for any possible gigging situation, on both upright and bass guitar, with any cabinet that I've tried, including an Acme B-1. However, I still own a New Yorker, which was AI's first light weight combo amp and it has a ClarusSL amp in it that produces a maximum of 350 watts at 2 ohms and 250 watts at 4 ohms.

Wilbyman, who I think started this thread, owns a ClarusSL amp and he asked me about volume using the Mini12+ with that amp. Yesterday, I disconnected the built-in SL amp from the Contra EX speaker and hooked it up to my Mini12+light, and spent time playing my upright through this. This combination gets way louder than just the built-in EX speaker and I think it sounds wonderful with upright. The sealed Mini12+L has a bigger low end than the ContraEX speaker although it isn't quite as hi fi, perhaps because the EX is a 3-way and not a 2-way speaker like the Schroeder. The sealed Mini12+ is very smooth sounding and doesn't have the "edge" that is characteristic of the Schroeder speakers I've heard--this edge is what makes them so fantastic at cutting through a mix when playing with others. OTOH, the mini12+L doesn't sound flabby or boomy like some bass guitar cabinets do that have scooped mid's (I"m thinking of the single 12 Aguilar), which sound makes them not so good for upright. Anyhow, the ClarusSl driving the sealed Schroeder was able to get loud enough that feedback finally became a problem, i.e., loud enough for any situation that I face when working.

I know I'm on the Bass Guitar forum, but I'm sorry that I didn't have the time to put this combination through its paces with my bass guitar. However, I'm sure it will sound equally good with bass guitar. It is my intention on doubling gigs or any gig where I'm concerned about volume (e.g., an outdoor gig with a loud band) to bring both my Mini12's and drive this combined 2 ohm load with my Focus Series III that produces 1000 watts at 2 ohms. If I had to pick another speaker that the sealed Schroeder sounds like, I'd say it was the Acme B-1 but WAY more efficieint. I love the sound of the B-1 but found that it took a big amp like the Focus or a Walter Woods Ultra to get it loud enough for loud gigs. I sold my Bergantino Ht-112 some time ago so couldn't do a real time comparison but I like the sound of the sealed Mni12+L way more than I did the HT-112 for upright. Hope this is helpful.

"...I know I'm on the Bass Guitar forum, but I'm sorry that I didn't have the time to put this combination through its paces with my bass guitar..."

Yeah, I'm surprised the moderators haven't moved this thread. But I think the whole point is some of us are thinking that this speaker might be the bomb for those of us that play UB and BG and don't want to have a whole house full of rigs for the different applications. That and I'm getting a little long in the tooth to be herfing 75 - 100 lb cabs around anymore.

DB Players:
You'll find that the 1210 makes a great doubling cabinet. That's my primary use for it. Yes, it's a fine electric bass cab. It's a great Double Bass cab!

omg,

someone pleez buy my schroe 1210L! that read j-bass is calling my name. :(

Actually, I was meaning to point to a particular pair of cabs for sale from a particular manufacturer, but hey, I'll take the "collateral damage." :D Actually, I am going to sell either that Read or my DJ4, but not both, and I'm leaning towards keeping the Read (but not committed). Whichever one I keep will likely get a J-Retro Deluxe thrown into it. :smug:

Still pondering this, though I think the Super Deluxe is too big a cab for me to huck to upright gigs. Schroeder or B1 I think. I think I'm going to get to check out the Schroeder soon. Kinda thinking about a Contra EX in the back of my mind, though I had the first Contra combo and hated it (love the amps). Will keep you guys posted. Jae, PM me on the Acme...you got a 4ohm?

Came yesterday. Only had time for a quick try out last night.

I got the tweetered, sealed, front fired.

First impressions: will work great for DB. Much less feedback and better response to the piezo than my "off brand" ported 12.

With Electric I'm wanting a little more bottom end. I'm going to try it tonight paired with the above ported 12. Might be the best of both worlds. Of course, to be fair, I didn't have a lot of time for pre-amp tweaks.

Wilbyman, PM me if you want futher details.

But out of the gate, I'm giving this cab Two thumbs up. And it is definately easy on the back.:hyper:

Just got back from first Rock band rehearsal with the Schroeder. Man o' man. With the AI and my compression pedal, it sang!

BTW, when Jorg says he designs his cabs to cut through the mix, believe it. My lead guitarist was so impressed, that he asked where he could get one to use as a subwoofer for his PA (are you taking note, Jorg?)

I have two Jazz rehearsals this weekend, so I'll be able to speak to the upright side of things then. Still tweaking in my practice room but like I said, I think the band mix will tell the tale.

I've used mine for three gigs so far. Our band uses a 400 powered mixer with two JBL cabs on poles. Each cab has a 1-15 and a horn. The guitarist uses a 40 watt vintage blackface with 1-12 in it. The drummer is un mic'd. I had been using an SWR 1-15 with a Markbass Little Mark head. We have a 2600 watt pa and big board with the PA cabs to match but have'nt used it in years. So...that gives you an idea of what we use for the gigs we play. We're never pushing it with the volume but we have enough for what we do.

My first gig with the Schroeder was a tiny pub in Geneva. Small hollow wooden stage. The house amp is an Ampeg B100R. The few times I used, I spent a good part of the night fiddling with the EQ to get a reasonable sound. The Schroeder sped that up, so that was good. The room is know to be drek for sound so I never gave a report on the tone.

Second gig was in a community hall in Lausanne for a crowd of about 200. Boomy room so we had to be careful with volume. With 450 watts on tap, volume was never a concern. A good balanced sound was. It was fine. Not great. Not bad. Shyte room acoustics. I could get a reasonable sound to get me through the gig, get paid, get home.

Third gig was in another community hall in France. Private 40th birthday party. Big room. Big proper stage for 40 people if needed. The stage was about 3 feet off the dance floor. Like a high school auditorium, with gymnasium acoustics.

The sound was fine. As much as the mids are pronounced and it has a horn, I missed some upper mid attack. The Markbass has Bass, Low-Mid, High-Mid, and Treble for EQ. I still haven't found the sweet spot to get a bit of clarity.

Let me tell you what kind of tone I shoot for. I play predominantly Jazz basses. I have a frankenbass fretless jazz and a Blade jazz. Both have blend controls and I run them through a Satdowsky floor preamp. Volume on preamp up full, bass boosted about 35-40%. Treble is usually at 10%. Boosted more with the Scroeder. I favour the back pickup with a nasally mid sound supported with solid lows. I hope you can imagine that.

The Schroeder is mid range focussed, which is good and punches me through the mix. I haven't been convinced of the low end yet. I have resisted posting any comments until I've played enough rooms to convince me that it's there. I'm not suggesting it isn't.

Volume wise, the bugger if friggin loud and can handle power. It doesn't give the Aguilar 1-12 lows, but that cab doesn't give me the mids I need.

Every cab is a compromise. Everyone of them is. If I had a roady, I'd have an SVT 810. Best cab. Love it. That said, I really like walking to the car at 0200am with bass on back, head in one hand and cab in the other. The band sounds fine. People enjoy us, blah blah blah.

I'm not 100% that it will replace my SWR cab. I will have to A/B them at a gig someday, and I had full intentions of doing so at the last three gigs. But ya know what? Each night I'm loading the car for a gig, I grab the Mini 12+ and leave the heavier cab behind, figuring why bother.

Please don't misunderstand me. I am not dissing the cab. It's very impressive and I do believe I need to wring it out more. I have a gig next Friday using my head and 2 Swr 1-15's. Two weeks later, I have two gigs back to back with the Schoeder outdoors where I will really get a sense of what it sounds like.

Sorry for the long post.
